Many people ask me why Calgary? And the answer is very simple. The innovation environment that has been created in the Province of Alberta attracts any entrepreneur who thinks about evolving their business and ideas. Alberta already attracts more technology professionals than any other province in Canada. Historically linked to Oil and Gas, the future of Calgary's economy depends on tech companies and this is already evident in several initiatives. The Alberta Catalyzer, focused on helping entrepreneurs in their early stages. The Innovate Edmonton which, alongside the Platform Calgary, contribute to creating a favorable environment for the exchange of ideas and personal and professional development of those who are there. And also, projects like Calgary Economic Development, which seek the integration of all players and helping to publicize the entire environment that Calgary has become. My tip today: It's not enough to just grow and share. The environment around you is fundamental when we really seek to make a difference. Being alongside visionaries will show that you are not "crazy" alone!

The new government holds the key to unlocking thousands of jobs and billions of pounds in investment for Kent and Medway if it recognises the region’s importance to achieving growth for the U.K. economy. This week the new PM Sir Keir Starmer sat down with the mayors of city regions across the U.K. – as well as leaders from Scotland and Wales – to discuss working more closely to deliver growth. Kent and Medway have yet to adopt the mayoral model but research from Locate in Kent suggests the region will make a significant contribution to the government’s growth agenda predicting an additional £23 billion in GVA for the UK economy over the next 25 years as investment is made and projects are delivered. Nick Fenton, CEO Locate in Kent, said: “Kent and Medway will be pivotal to the success of the new government’s growth ambitions given its strategically important location for the UK as the gateway between London and Europe. “As the region works towards net zero, Kent and Medway’s future jobs prospects will come from sectors including new methods of food production, evolving communication technologies, life science R&D, advanced manufacturing and green energy. "The government has set out a new roadmap to further accelerate much-needed trade and investment in key port areas across the country. The successful Freeports policy introduced in 2021 is already empowering strategically located port communities to realise their economic potential – and in just two years, has attracted almost £3 billion of investment which will create over 6,000 jobs. The new Freeports Delivery Roadmap will help Freeports to go even further by laying out an action plan of over 50 cross-government measures. These include: 1. A £150 million Investment Opportunities Fund to help Freeports and Investment Zones respond quickly to land large investment opportunities as they arise. 2. Extending the window to claim special tax reliefs in English Freeport sites from five years to ten – securing a whole decade of growth for port communities. Other measures in the roadmap include: 1. Improving infrastructure: The UK Infrastructure Bank will work with Freeports to finance upgrades to infrastructure, including through flexible loans to local authorities and debt, equity or guarantees to private sector investors. 2. Skills and workforce access: Ensuring joint working between Freeports, Institutes of Technology and local colleges, and linking local jobseekers to opportunities at Freeports through Jobcentre Plus. 3. Investment promotion: Bringing government departments together to look at targeted interventions where Freeports face barriers to investment. 4. Programme delivery: Creating an independent advisory panel for Freeports, to increase the business voice within the programme. Some of the measures outlined in the Freeports Delivery Roadmap also apply to Investment Zones, which are boosting productivity and growth in areas in need of levelling up."

The economic development of a region relies heavily on the efficient functioning of its municipalities. One critical factor that influences economic growth is the speed in which the municipality can establish new residents and businesses. This growth is impossible if residential and commercial real estate cannot quickly meet the growing demand. We believe municipalities must consider streamlining permitting processes as a high priority economic development initiative. By reducing excessive controls, enhancing transparency, and fostering a business-friendly environment, municipalities can attract investments, stimulate entrepreneurship, and ultimately fuel economic progress. While the Federal government has been known for its aspirational economic development strategy, Ontario has opted for a more focused, minimalist approach. The province’s 2024 budget, announced in late March, includes: - A new $12M Health Technology Accelerator Fund - A $20M extension to the Forest Biomass Program - A three-year, $15M extension to the Critical Minerals Innovation Fund - An additional $100M for the Invest Ontario Fund The healthcare sector has welcomed the new innovation funding, but there are concerns about whether it will enable hospitals to adopt new technologies amidst pressing issues such as capacity constraints and staff burnout. It remains to be seen if the increased healthcare funding will alleviate resource pressures to embrace new Canadian technologies, a recurring challenge in the industry. Follow Nexus Strategic Consultants for more updates and coverage of the federal budget being tabled later today.
