The word is definitely out. Regional NSW is the place to be. 👏 The Regional Australia Institute (RAI) Regional Movers Index (RMI) for the September 2023 quarter saw regional NSW overtake regional QLD and claim the title of being the most desirable location for metropolitan movers. The Snowy Valleys Local Government Area (LGA) in southern NSW, located between our Cooma and Wagga Wagga Boyce offices, emerged as a hot spot for movers, recording a more than 200% increase in net internal migration over the last quarter, and an almost 130% increase over the last year. Our Boyce teams are based in various locations throughout regional NSW, and we aren’t surprised by this trend - we know how great regional NSW is to live, work and play in! Truth Telling is a great concept, sharing stories that are painful to bring up, but need to be heard, without any bulldust. Sounds simple, but there is genius in simple concepts, imagine if we all did this all the time. Thanks for sharing Clinton.
What is Truth Telling and why is it important for Australia? Let’s take Roebourne as an example. Ieramugadu, as Roebourne is known in Ngarluma language, has been a signicant place for Ngarluma people since time immemorial. In whitefella language, it is ancient. But it is also hugely significant because of its more recent history. From the 1930s, the Western Australian Government forced Aboriginal people from living on Country to Roebourne. Aboriginal people were forced to live in what is now known as the “Old Reserve”, a flat area across the river from Roebourne town. At its peak, the Reserve housed many hundreds of Aboriginal people, making it the largest in Western Australia. However people weren’t really “housed”. Almost all were forced to lived in tents and shacks, where it’s regularly over 45 degrees. The reserve was divided into camps for the different tribal groups, like Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi, Kuruma etc ⛺️ 🔥 ⛺️ 🔥 Remember, for tens of thousands of years, different nations were not allowed to simply live on another nation’s Country. And now they were forced to break these ancient laws. This caused great agony for people who were forced to break their law. The living conditions were harsh; most lived in makeshift shelters called humpys. There were not enough toilets for everyone. For a long time water had to be collected from a well. There was no plumbing despite the towns around all having these facilities. People were not allowed to freely leave the Reserve. This is a time when permission slips were required for Aboriginal people to go into town. Aboriginal people in Roebourne were controlled by the Police and the Native Welfare Department. Cooking at the Reserve was done on campfires 🔥 and the area was prone to flooding, further complicating life for the residents. If families needed food they had to collect rations that were distributed from a ‘welfare’ building near the Post Office. The Reserve remained open until 1️⃣9️⃣7️⃣5️⃣‼️ 1975!!! Our people were still forced to live in shacks and tents without proper plumbing, water, toilets, showers, rations etc. In the 70s Aboriginal people were again forced to move without consultation. This time from the Reserve to a place called “the Village”. The Village was later demolished, in part due to asbestos and poor infrastructure. Despite this traumatic history, the Old Reserve and The Village are the places of childhood memories for our people. When you think about where you grew up, this is how our people feel about the Old Reserve, the Village, and now Roebourne But how many Australians know this history? Many people know of Roebourne as the “oldest town in the north west”, or the colonial buildings in the town. So, as the Australian Government ponders next steps in the reconciliation journey, we remind the nation that truth telling is an essential step toward healing and justice. It’s time. #Makaratta #TruthTelling #firstnations #westernaustralia #australia
