As we look back on the awesome year of 2023 for us, we grew 5x+ in customer base. But being always on the run, as a startup founder you simply forget to pause, look back, and thank the team which made it all happen. Large companies have HR teams, team awards, multiple offsites etc. Startups generally dont even have a process and people to remember what happened last week. Doing 11 demo calls a day, we forget there are multiple feature launches, customer wins, late night efforts put in by everyone else. In a startup, you learn new things and gaps in yourself every day and also make new mistakes. Big thank you to the Factors.AI family. You wanna know how silicon valley startups really work? I'll tell you. A founder/co-founders will start working on a startup while they're still working at a bigger company. They'll put together an MVP and socialize it within their group of friends who are other founders or leaders in other tech companies. The founder/co-founders will make a deal with their friends that they will use their products if they will sign up and "pay" for the MVP. You give me $5, i'll give you $5 kinda thing. Remember only revenue matters at this point. No one care about expenses. Founder/Co-founders now have 10-15 paying, referenceable customers (who are all their friends). They've gotten to $100k in ARR. Time to raise. They go to their friends who are GPs/partners at VC firms and raise a $7M seed round. They then hire a marketing team (1-2 people), more developers (from their old jobs) and maybe a sales person or two. Then they're of to the races with 10-15 logos for social proof, a few case studies, no real idea if they have PMF, but it doesn't matter because they can throw $7M at marketing and create buzz. Now compare that to someone who doesn't have a network.

The biggest difference between corporate life and startup life: Doing. Throughout my last 10 years at a corporate, my focus was on: - Seeing the bigger picture - Providing a stable ground for my team - Strategizing - Solving interpersonal issues within my team Today, as a tech startup founder, my focus had shifted to: - Sales calls - Following up on prospects - Ensuring customer success - Product strategy - Financial management Yes, I also strategize and aim to see the bigger picture, but early-stage startup life is all about the little things. I met a founder who quit his cozy Google job & founded not 1 but 2 unicorns. He ignored nearly all lean startup advice. Then grew to $3M in 1 year: Arvind Jain was a Distinguished Engineer at Google. He made Google “faster than the blink of an eye”. Then he got bored— so he quit. He co-founded Rubrik, which grew to $500M in revenue and just filed to go public. It wasn’t enough. 5 years ago, he noticed a problem at Rubrik. As they hired more engineers, productivity slowed down. New hires couldn’t find the information they needed. So Arvind quit Rubrik and founded Glean to solve enterprise search. He did everything lean startup tells you not to do. - He didn’t focus on launching an MVP. - He ignored early market feedback. - He didn’t charge beta users anything— for 2 years. And it worked. He went from $0 to $3M in revenue the year he launched publicly. He tripled to about $9M the year after. And tripled every year since. Two months ago, Glean raised $200M at a $2B valuation. Most founders can’t do exactly what Arvind Jain did. He’s a proven founder who raised $15M with just a deck. But after spending 10 years building 2 unicorns, here’s his number 1 advice for early-stage founders: “Conviction and persistence." If you see a problem…don't think too much about who else is solving it or how big the market is. Just go and solve the problem and persist and believe in it. There's going to be ups and downs. There's going to be people telling you they wouldn’t pay for it. Don't worry about all of that.
