Most of us have heard the iconic Johnny Cash song, "One Piece at a Time," which offers a valuable lesson in systems thinking. The late Russell Ackoff emphasized that the properties of any system are unique to the whole and not resident in its individual parts. He argued that the decline of the West could be linked to the almost-universal way we divide organizations into functional silos, hindering true optimization. Ackoff posited that every organization is a system of systems that must be optimized collectively, emphasizing the need to break down silos for overall efficiency. Failing to think systematically about our own organizations is akin to building a car one piece at a time without regard to how the pieces fit together. Josh's expertise is something out of my league, but his ability to captivate a packed audience was a thing of art. You should have seen how he brilliantly summarized all of the intricate technical details of this 35-minute talk into a simple, scalable takeaway, ingeniously framing it around the familiar tune of "Old McDonald." Want to be great at in any role in a team? Just do these three things. 1. Ask question about your task and make sure you understand what your suppose to get done. There are no stupid questions, but it's stupid mistakes that could be avoided by making sure we understand and that details are communicated. For managers it's making sure the questions get answered. I don't know is ok - because you can find out. But what you don't know to answer usually ends up biting you in the *ss. 2. If you get stuck in the mud, its ok scream for help. 99% of the time one wheel left spinning will make everyone late. So that's why the whole team should be there to push and get things unstuck. If you want to get somewhere fast, go alone. If you want to get far, go together. This goes for managers too - we constantly need to learn about the details to deliver better quality specs and plans. No superheros, just super teams of professionals. 3. Quality is a team effort, so ask for it at every stage. Have a mundane task? Crush it. If you value specs quality, build quality, UX quality or quality in general it's everybody's job. Holding each other accountable for quality at all stages raises the bar in day to day operations. Kaizen, one 1% improvement daily (1.01^365) makes your 37.78% better in a year and that's massive. Or just listen to Obama
