Is there room for a philosopher at the space policy table? Ethan Magistro ‘24’s senior thesis says yes, as he applies the concept of eternalism to space policy development. After having deep discussions about big ideas throughout his childhood in Morristown, New Jersey and studying philosophy in high school, Magistro came to Princeton set on continuing those studies. By the end of his first year, he’d also become interested in space policy. As a child, he was fascinated with space, taking detailed notes on satellites in the sky. According to Magistro, his captivation with space aligned with his philosophical interests, “The early pre-Socratic philosophers were astronomers, mathematicians, scientists.” Magistro’s thesis explores the ethical implications of eternalism: the idea that all moments in the past, present and future are equally real and now exist within the universe. Magistro considers, “We should feel the weight of suffering that exists across time, and prevent that kind of suffering in the future. That means taking seriously what future people might need.” He connects it to his aim in policy work: to create space policies that set up people for current and future success. The idea for Magistro’s thesis came from a presentation he gave in professor Hans Halvorson’s philosophy of physics course. Halvorson later became Magistro’s thesis adviser, saying of Magistro, “Ethan has found a brilliant solution to one of life’s hardest puzzles: to find the overlap between what the world needs, what you’re good at and what brings you satisfaction.” The thesis was awarded a Department of Philosophy Class of 1869 Prize, a departmental Tomb Prize and a 2024 Senior Thesis Prize. Last summer, Magistro fulfilled a childhood dream as a space policy intern with NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's Office of Space Commerce, where he helped develop a space debris and satellite tracking system. This fall, Magistro will become a fellow in Princeton School of Public and International Affairs's Scholars in the Nation’s Service Initiative MPA graduate program: https://bit.ly/4cTOe2V
Yes to the yes. Philosophers, ethicists in particular, belong at every "policy table." Eternalism, and what about the economics / decision theory concept of externalisation? Respectfully to Halvorson who naturally wants to tout his student, Magistro did not invent that formulation for human fulfillment. It can be found in the learned writings of many Western, non-Western, ancient, and modern thinkers around the world. One thing I cannot abide is American Ivy League schools claiming we invented something that we did not. Y'all can legit say that Magistro further developed these long-existant ideas and applied them to space exploration. Please, Princeton PR Department, you need to do better than, for example, Dartmouth Alumni magazine claiming they "invented" snow skiing. (Tell that to the people of the ancient Alpine community of Val d'Isere, France.) Get real or go home.
🐐🐐🐐 Looking forward to this next year together!
There should always be room for a philosopher at any policy table.
Insightful
Congrats Ethan on a magnificent academic career and making your dreams come true. I started out as a Pre-Med (and hated it), and switched to Anthropology. It led me to a very exciting and successful 40 year career in Marketing! Go change the world (and outer space) Tiger! 🐯
Such an amazing human! So grateful our paths crossed at Princeton.
Amazing Ethan!!! Proud to have taught this young man in high school and I will take credit for his trendy fashion sense! 😂
Love this!!

1moI know Ethan Magistro from the Princeton Legal Journal. In addition to being an incredibly smart, dedicated person who consistently commits himself to contending with nuanced questions, he is also an absolutely amazing leader. This is so exciting to see.
