Introductions This is a lasting memory from my first week in Infosys ..20 years back.. As finance business partners, we were invited to the quarterly performance reviews by the Top Management. As a nervous early 20s guy, overawed by seeing Superstars of the IT Industry in person, I was just taking it in, and talking to my peers. A hand reached out for introductions. "Hi..I am Basab Pradhan" Basab was a superstar, then Sales Head of Infosys.. Who wouldn't know him and why should he take the lead in introducing ourselves. I can tell you, that initiation from him was so helpful in making me feel at ease for the rest of that review session. When he could have easily continued his strategic conversations with rest of his clan, he took a minute out to make someone as insignificant and nervous as me, feel at ease, and welcome me to the org. If you are in a setting where you are in a comparatively more powerful position, try easing the nerves of a younger nervous colleague. Works wonders. Leaves a lasting impact. Winning together by amplifying potential   A company culture that encourages employees to experiment and possibly fail is rare. But at Infosys, it is the status quo. It’s a principle that is intertwined with our core mission of amplifying human potential to create the next opportunity for people, businesses and communities. By urging our team to take chances and go where their curiosities and skills lead them, we embody this mission every day. My own career at Infosys is a testament to this culture. I joined Infosys in 1998, transitioning from a career in corporate finance to information technology. It was a bold move for that time, so naturally I was riddled with doubts and unsure if this was the right decision. But the CFO of Infosys at the time encouraged me to take a leap of faith. Give it a chance, he said, and if it doesn’t work out, we’ll find you a finance role. This was the psychological safety net I needed for me to embark on a new path. Fast forward 14 years. This time, I wanted to move back to finance and got the same kind of backing from the finance leadership. They supported me wholeheartedly despite many skill gaps– from the basics of how to review a contract, to more advanced skills of building robust financial models. The comprehensive training and support that I received not only bridged these gaps but also boosted my confidence, spurring me to innovate, introducing new automations that helped us run our operations more effectively. This cross pollination of ideas and skills was only possible through the power of a work culture that promotes a continuous cycle of upskilling and reskilling. This environment encourages a broadened perspective, allowing employees to see the bigger picture while advancing their careers. I see many examples of this playing out at Infosys today – either with proactive rotation at senior levels or by creating an environment that supports internal job movements. It’s true, not every job change leads to immediate success, and some employees may return to their original roles. However, the key is the freedom to explore these opportunities without the fear of failure – embodying the true spirit of Infosys’ commitment to amplifying human potential. A question called “Why?”   At the core of every decision we make and every action we take lies a simple question – “Why?” This one question guides us at Infosys, where, in a team of over 320,000, our collective endeavor is to amplify human potential and create the next opportunity for people, businesses and communities. In this environment, it’s essential to discover a personal “why” that aligns with our shared mission, ensuring our work is not only motivating but satisfying. As a leader, I recently had a wonderful opportunity to guide a colleague at a pivotal moment in his career by helping him rediscover his connection to our shared purpose. The story began when this senior teammate (an Infoscion for over 24 years) told me he was leaning towards an offer from another company – a common scenario in an industry where the competition for seasoned leadership is fierce. What unfolded over the next few hours was a great conversation, where we revisited his long journey at the company – the ups and downs, the camaraderie and support, the challenges faced and overcome together, the learning experiences and diverse roles, the growth fostered by both institutionalized programs and our work culture. At the heart of our discussion was a reminder of the purpose and values that always guided him here – the “why” behind his two decades plus at the company. The discussion was a seminal moment, as he realized he still deeply believed in and aligned with the purpose and values of the company. Recognizing this, I encouraged him to involve his family in his decision-making. Not surprisingly, his wife and kids wholeheartedly agreed that he continue working at Infosys due to the strong value system and work culture he enjoyed here. His decision to stay was further supported by a review of his career development program and elevation towards higher leadership roles.    This experience was a heartening and powerful reminder to me of our work – that it is ultimately about our people and their aspirations, relationships, and values. And it was a vivid reminder that at the root of our efforts - from individual achievements to our shared successes - therein lies the “why,” an essential question that motivates us all. I had a firsthand experience of this commitment a few years ago when we embarked on a comprehensive IT transformation project for a leading European firm. Even before we commenced the project, the client took a very profound business decision, rendering our initial implementation plans and solution obsolete. The clock ticking, we were forced back to the drawing board. As doubts began growing over our ability to execute the transformation, the leadership in a critical call with the client’s sponsor, reaffirmed our commitment and pledged full support to ensure the project’s success. The calm confidence and support from leadership permeated through our team, igniting a renewed sense of determination. Over the next several weeks, our fired-up group worked tirelessly, determined to exceed the client’s expectations and establish ourselves as a trusted partner.
