Riyadh-based investment platform Abyan Capital has raised $18 million in a Series A round led by STV. The round also included participation from Saudi’s Wa’ed Ventures and RZM Investment. Founded in 2021 by Abdullah Aljeraiwi, Omar Almania, and Saleh Alaqeel, Abyan Capital launched its Shariah-compliant robo-advisory platform in 2022 to make it easy for an average user in Saudi to save and invest. Abyan allows users to open their account on its platform (available on iOS and Android) in just three minutes and deposit money to start investing. The users get a portfolio recommendation based on their risk and other preferences during their onboarding. The platform enables users to invest in a mix of sukuks, real-estate, and local and international stocks. They are a relatively new and dynamic segment of the Indian financial markets, with approximately 1,000 plus registered AIFs with SEBI AIFs are defined in Regulation 2(1) (b) of Securities and Exchange Board of India (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations, 2012. They refer to any privately pooled investment fund, (whether from Indian or foreign sources), in the form of a trust or a company or a body corporate or a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP). 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐈𝐅𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 As per SEBI there are three categories of AIFs 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐈: Mainly invests in start- ups, SME's or any other sector that the Govt. considers economically and socially viable. It includes: 1. Venture Capital Fund 2. SME Funds 3. Social Venture Funds 4. Infrastructure Funds 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐈: The funds which doesn’t fall under Category I & III and which doesn’t undertake leverage or borrowing other than to meet day to day operational requirements. It includes:  1. Real Estate Funds 2. Private Equity Funds 3. Fund of Funds 𝐂𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐈𝐈𝐈: Alternative Investment Funds that employs diverse or complex trading strategies and may employ leverage including through investment in listed or unlisted derivatives. It includes: 1. Hedge Funds 2. PIPE Funds 𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐈𝐅 Investors looking to diversify their portfolios can invest in AIFs if they meet the following eligibility criteria: 1.Resident Indians, NRIs, and foreign nationals are eligible to invest. 2.The minimum investment limit for investors is Rs. 1 crore, while directors, employees, and fund managers have a minimum investment requirement of Rs. 25 lakhs. 3.AIFs typically have a minimum lock-in period of three years. 4.The number of investors in each scheme is generally restricted to 1000, with the exception of angel funds, which can have up to 200 investors #linkedin #linkedincommunity #linkedinforcreators #privateequity #venturecapital #pe #vc #aif
