A Black-led grocery store is breaking barriers and building a future of food equity in Detroit! According to reports, the Detroit People’s Food Co-Op will be opening it’s doors this year as a part of the Detroit Food Commons (DFC) project — a 31,000-square-foot two-story building that will also be a hub for community engagement. The second floor of the building will house commercial kitchens, a venue for performances and film screenings, and a health-conscious café. With a commitment to sourcing from Detroit-based and Black-owned businesses, the co-op aims to tackle the alarming 69% food insecurity rate in Detroit households, according to the Detroit Food Policy Council’s 2021 report. Challenges persist in implementing Senate Bill 946 and Senate Bill 972, which hold promise for formalizing street vending businesses, particularly in Los Angeles. Many cities are still not in compliance and barriers hinder formalization, especially for food vendors. In collaboration with the Los Angeles Street Vendor Campaign (LASVC), Inclusive Action, is actively engaged in community-based efforts to create pathways for street vendors' formalization. They provide training, policy advocacy at the county level, and outreach initiatives, including formalization clinics. Achievements include successful advocacy for a Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation program and ongoing efforts to reduce sidewalk vending permit costs. Despite progress, the journey to integrate street vendors into a safe and supportive formal economy continues. For many college students, living off campus for the first time can be overwhelming. You’re on your own for the first time and that means you need to start considering grocery shopping, meal prep, and learning how to cook. This combined with other stressful factors including student loans, grades, health, maintaining a social life, and more can be daunting. Something that UMass students might consider is joining the Common Share Food Co-op. The Co-op will be a full-service, community and worker-owned grocery store located close to downtown Amherst. The store will feature local and organic produce, meats, and dairy products. It will also carry bulk foods, dry goods, frozen foods and cleaning products.
