The Supreme Court issued its highly-anticipated decision in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson today – holding that a city’s efforts to prohibit unhoused individuals from sleeping outside when there’s nowhere else for them to sleep does not violate the Eighth Amendment’s protection against cruel and unusual punishment. The work of Pro Bono Institute Law Firm Pro Bono Project® members and Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge® signatories like Dechert LLP and Alston & Bird on amicus briefs in the case provided important context on the breadth and impact of the homelessness crisis, highlighted the Constitutional implications of criminalizing homelessness, and laid the groundwork for future advocacy. Check out Pro Bono Institute’s latest PBEye blog post, “Sheltering Justice: The Crucial Role of Pro Bono Lawyers After Grants Pass v. Johnson,” to read about PBI Intern Hailey Kearsley’s experiences attending the Supreme Court oral argument in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson and reflections on their recent landmark decision, including the crucial role of pro bono lawyers in future advocacy. https://bit.ly/45RQjuc #SupremeCourt #AccesstoJustice
