Stories like these break my heart. I’ve worked with some amazing nurses in my hospice career. Your post isn’t surprising. Why? Because there are SO many bad CEOs, OWNERS, and ADMINISTRATORS. Why? Because many do not really know what they are doing; they cut their teeth starting companies, and on moving up with short stints at many companies. (Study their resumes). They can afford to make medical and management mistakes because in the end—nothing will happen to them if they drink the company kool-aid. However, so far, the members of the interdisciplinary team are disposable. The corporate/company focus is on making money. They are NOT leaders. They are not people of integrity. Their mission is about wealth generation and not about CARE, COMFORT, COMPASSION, and UPLIFTING HUMANITY; NOR RESPECT FOR THEIR HARD-WORKING EMPLOYEES. Their advertising and brand is all window dressing. Support of and training for staff is not their mission. Sadly. What can be done? Keep posting the truth of the matter. Lobby Congress. Reach out to your local media. Report them. Sue. Start a Union. Ask questions, research, and expose. Highlight the great medical facilities; word of mouth is powerful. There are SO many noble and trustworthy providers in all aspects of our medical spectrum. I’m taking as many speaking engagements as I can handle to spread the truth. I’m not getting a lot of public support either, so I understand the dilemma of nurses who have been abused. The ruthless complain there are a dearth of good workers. NOT THE PROBLEM. Professionals are not going to apply at companies where there is no respect and support. Not to mention that equitable pay is lacking. The work culture of our former company, Hospice Advantage in the final years was rabid . . . oppressive . . . cut-throat . . . and blood thirsty. These people do not understand what servant-leaders are; what a calling is; and what a ministry or true mission is. They are not spiritually or emotionally mature human beings. For anyone utilizing medical care as a business in this country, the bottom line should be excellent patient care. It should be the utmost respect for those professionals who make that happen. The quality of medical care is being diminished in this country by ruthless financial sharks. Hospitals are losing great nurses. I reserve a special place in my heart for bedside nurses struggling to stay. I always loved the hospital environment and struggled to stay, too. So much of what I know clinically, I learned from nurses to be a better advocate as an Administrator. Nurses need more support and advocacy in poorly led hospitals. The need for more support for bedside nurses starts with nurse managers and clinical leaders up the chain of command. The buck stops with the CEO, and a bad CEO enables poor leadership up to the bedside. A bad CEO builds a bench of like-minded 'leaders.' Yesterday, a nurse who was recently physically assaulted by a patient in a locked psychiatric unit reached out to me in private. I don't know this nurse, but she was frightened and sought my advice based on my shared stories. She was the second nurse physically assaulted on the unit in one week. The last nurse received no support from leadership, and she was afraid to press the issue because she defended herself. She hit back, fearing for her life. Nurses who hit back are typically punished. She suffered an injury, and the only report filed on her behalf was a WC claim. She would like to transition to a clinical role in a less dangerous setting. Is there such a place for nurses? I shared that every nurse I've heard from with a similar story was reported to the nursing Board and lost their license. The trigger wasn't the assault but their resignation with proper notice. The hospital or SNF retained them as they were short-staffed. None counseled the nurse. None provided appropriate safety measures. None took any action until the end. The reported nurses had to appeal their license revocation. Those who lost appeals cannot work as nurses today while they wait out the period to reapply, which can be years. Some chose to leave clinical nursing as the trauma was too much. Even with copious amounts of documentation and witnesses, hiring an attorney and going up against a hospital is not for the faint of heart. Finding an attorney with no conflict of interest with a hospital is challenging. Nurses who are assaulted at work with no support don't go unnoticed by new grads and others. No one pursues a profession and stays in a job that can kill you. Where do we go from here? We are patients, too.
