If you’re working with a recruiting agency that does not provide a guarantee period for their candidates, you need to find a new agency to work with. The guarantee period should be 90 days. If the candidate quits or gets terminated for any reason within 90 days, the agency will find their replacement for no additional fees. 90 days should give you ample time to determine if the candidate is a knucklehead or not. Working Retained is about more than just making sure you get paid for your time. When you charge a fee upfront, because you're getting maximum commitment, and you KNOW you're getting paid (even if the role is pulled), you can provide a far better service. You can give your clients value you simply can't on a Contingent basis (yes, even exclusive). Even things we consider basic like Job Briefing calls with hiring managers become way more in-depth. They'll even actually listen to, and implement your ideas. Salary too low? They'll increase it. Or consider less-senior candidates. Because they're now in it 100%, because there's money at stake. The time to hire will speed up enormously also, because SLAs (agreed timescales) are no longer fake promises. I've never met someone who has worked Retained properly, and gone back to a normal Contingent model. But I have met many who have quit Recruitment because they're sick of having their time wasted.
