AI will fundamentally restructure our entire information ecosystem. But how?   Earlier in 2024 I had the privilege of working with Shuwei Fang and the media team at Open Society Foundations to apply scenario analysis to that question. We collected scenarios from ~900 well-informed people around the world, developed those into detailed scenarios and ‘driving forces’, then tested them at a 60-person workshop held in Piedmont, Italy in April 2024. Don't be fooled by #AI-generated "news" sites. PR and journalism are quickly confronting the implications of this disturbing trend. Last week, we helped get one of our clients placed in a high-profile national publication. Today, an AI-generated "news website," picked up pieces of the story, repurposed them and published it. In this case, the information was not inaccurate but it begs the question..what happens when it is? There is no newsroom to call with a human being on the other end: a human being who is supposed to have ethics and a commitment to the truth. While I remain excited about the possibilities AI presents, I remain deeply concerned about the nefarious ways this technology is being used. Here's one dead giveaway you're looking at an AI-generated news site: April Isaacs=AI.

Today we’re announcing new ways we’re bringing some of Google’s AI technology to journalists and news organizations. Through Pinpoint, a tool for journalists, we’re announcing new generative AI features that help reporters evaluate documents or a collection of documents by asking questions to better understand key points. For example, if a reporter was looking at a collection of historical documents, they could ask Pinpoint questions to help them better understand what’s in them, such as their key points and main themes. Here are our takeaways: Journalists are in charge. AI-based technology can enhance a journalists’ work - not replace it. The journalist and editor must be in control of editorial decisions when using generative AI tools and make the choice about what content to use or not use. Innovative newsrooms are putting AI to work. Journalists and editorial teams are looking for ways to thoughtfully and intentionally bring AI into the newsroom; from transcribing interviews, and producing summaries of large documents, to helping brainstorm headlines.
