Happy Monday everyone! Yesterday, I had a call with one of my brothers from my first deployment, and it reminded me of the importance of teamwork. When I led my first team, I emphasized the value of diversity and individual strengths, but also acknowledged our weaknesses. As a team, it was our obligation to work together, learn from each other, and build on our areas of opportunity. I drew inspiration from Voltron, an animated series featuring a team of space explorers who pilot a giant super robot. Each member had their own robot with unique weapons and agility, but when faced with an obstacle too great for one individual to handle, they aligned together, trusted their appointed leader, and followed the direction towards a desired outcome. To gain my team's trust, I showed them who I was earnestly and got to know them on a personal level. I remember one conversation in particular, where a team member named Dupree asked me to address him one-on-one if there was a need for improvement. I respected his honesty and gave him the same in return. The key takeaway from my experience is to treat your team like people. Yelling may be necessary at times, but there is a way to correct and build up an individual without tearing them down.
