With over 17,000 islands, each one has its own culture, landscape, and history. ⤑ 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: This diversity is Indonesia’s greatest strength. It attracts millions of visitors each year and keeps them coming back. However, to truly appreciate Indonesia, you need to look beyond the usual tourist spots and uncover the hidden gems that often go unnoticed. ⤑ Imagine 40 years from now, is Indonesia will still be beautiful? Sustainable tourism is the answer to Indonesia’s unique identity for future generations. So, here’s my question: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗮? I’m Taking Research to The Villages in Bali, Indonesia   In line with my expertise, I am conducting research on tourism villages, focusing on Cemagi Village in Bali. This fascinating village, with its rich cultural heritage and scenic landscapes, provides an ideal case study for examining the dynamics of rural tourism development.   My research aims to understand how tourism impacts the local community, economy, and environment in Cemagi Village. By exploring these aspects, I hope to identify sustainable practices that can enhance the village's appeal as a tourist destination while preserving its cultural and natural integrity.   As part of my research, I had the opportunity to interview the Chief of Cemagi Village. It was an honor for EcoNusa and Kobumi to be participated in the 7th Hospitality Indonesia Conference held on January 30-31, 2024. Moderating two agendas, EcoNusa Foundation with KOBUMI Indonesia also shared information on how sustainable tourism practices impact nature and biodiversity, and how we contribute to ecotourism initiatives especially in Eastern Indonesia. As Bali rebounds from the pandemic, some businesses embrace the surge in visitors, while others grow frustrated by unruly tourists and environmental degradation. Last May, the former governor of Bali proposed a limit on the number of tourists visiting the island. This came after a suggestion in January to prohibit activities on Bali's sacred mountains, which was enforced in June. However, the ban on mountain activities was reversed just four months after it was put in place, and the idea of a visitor cap was also abandoned. The reality check: Bali exceeded its tourist targets for 2023, but at what cost? These issues touch on female empowerment, over-dependence on tourism, plastic pollution, “Jakarta’s colonization of Bali”, and economic leakage. As an example, it is the mindless economic pursuit requiring an excessive water use for tourism and land use for hotels and roads that has led to the degradation of rice terraces. Those are the very attractions that allure travelers to Bali in the first place. There are many lessons to be learned from Bali, but one particularly stands out.
