The Beauty Boom: Lipstick Sales Reach New Heights in Early 2024 Jakarta, July 19, 2024 - The beauty category in e-commerce continues to grow, with an 8% sales increase compared to 2023, according to Magpie E-commerce Intelligence. The global lip market is projected to reach USD 22.17 billion, with USD 359.3 million in Indonesia, making it an attractive market for brands. In Indonesia, 82% of beauty enthusiasts prefer e-commerce for purchasing lip products. The Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of the lip market hit IDR 516.6 billion, with 16.7 million products sold on Shopee and Tokopedia. Shopee led the market with a 77.3% share, though Tokopedia showed growth with a 2.5% increase in GMV. Maybelline topped both platforms, with local brands like Wardah and Hanasui also performing well. The lipstick category dominated, while affordable lip balms and care products, especially from The Originote, gained popularity due to bulk purchases. In May 2024, Shopee and Lazada reached a combined monthly sales value of $620M USD and 130M units sold in the Skincare and Makeup category across six Southeast Asian countries: Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia. Vietnam leads with 45% market share, followed by Indonesia at 28%. On the two E-commerce platforms, the main sub-categories within Skincare and Makeup include skincare, makeup, and beauty devices. Among these, skincare is ranked first, making up almost 70% of sales in Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore. In Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, skincare also leads, however, makeup remains a significant segment with over 30% of sales. When it comes to TikTok Shop, the cosmetics category reached a sales value of about 190 million USD across the Southeast Asian countries. About 31% of sales was taken by Indonesia, followed by Thailand at 25%. Vietnam came third with about 17% of the market share. It must be noted that TikTok’s cosmetics and skincare category differs from Shopee & Lazada’s, and is inclusive of perfume, while not including beauty tools. So what? Skincare Product Sales Surge in 2024 with Notable Growth in Sunscreen Market Jakarta, July 24, 2024 - Skincare product sales have surged with a projected 20% increase, reaching USD 2.7 billion in 2024. This growth is driven by the daily use of sunscreen by 87.3% of consumers, resulting in an additional 2.8 million products sold compared to 2022. Online platforms, particularly e-commerce, have played a significant role in this growth. In Q1 2024, the sunscreen market achieved a gross merchandise value (GMV) of IDR 318.04 billion with 6.3 million products sold on Shopee, Lazada, and Tokopedia. Shopee led the e-commerce market share with 74.9%, while Lazada showed significant growth with a 90.3% GMV increase from Q4 2023.
