Insurance companies are proposing a 42% rate increase in North Carolina. Why? Because climate disasters are getting “too expensive”. This is the same industry that has insured BILLIONS in fossil fuel projects. The hypocrisy is astounding. #climatecrisis #insuranceindustry #fossilfuels

Climate disasters are becoming more frequent and people are suffering—and the insurance industry is partly to blame. In a recent article for the CT Mirror, Sharon Lewis highlights the devastating impacts of the actions of the insurance industry. 🌎 Not only are insurance premiums sky-rocketing nationwide, but insurance companies are also continuing to insure climate-wrecking fossil fuels. These climate impacts are heightened for low-income communities and communities of color. "Due to a history of government-sanctioned racist policies such as redlining and restrictive covenants, these communities face heightened exposure to climate impacts like wildfires, flooding, hurricanes, and sea-level rise." It’s time to address the problem. This starts with recognizing and rectifying the lack of transparency of the insurance industry. “If we don’t figure this out soon, we’ll all be under water.” 🔗 Find out more https://lnkd.in/eQ3fGf-z

In addition to the need for the coming generations to inherit a habitable earth, #climatejustice has no greater argument than this. How we built our cities and nations was anything but #equitable, in terms of the location of individuals/groups and the infrastructure provided. To further punish them for those decisions, based on risks that we created and continue to exacerbate, is equally shameful and unsurprising. Unless we want to create new levels of impoverishment, adaptation and resilience will mean nothing without an equally strong justice lens.

The insurance industry is adapting quickly to climate change: by massively increasing rates in high risk areas each year, and in some cases even refusing to offer new coverage. As this article explains, "This will continue to have a calamitous impact, with reductions, withdrawals, and claim denials disproportionately affecting low-income and communities of color." Once again, climate change affects us all: but it doesn't affect us all equally. https://lnkd.in/gVw6Kx-6

The conditions are evident for a paradigm shift in the insurance business, including government intervention – i.e., financial support – towards evolving a society that is resilient and adaptive. Single bottom line profitability will not save the world at large. It's essential that the pillars of government, business, and civil society get into balance.

Property insurers are refusing to provide coverage in areas vulnerable to climate change impacts (those areas are growing), and increasing premiums significantly where they do offer coverage. We can only solve this issue by adapting climate-resistant building codes, retrofitting infrastructure, and reducing carbon emissions — which means drastically reducing our use of fossil fuels. The insurance industry must do its part by agreeing not to insure and finance new fossil fuel projects. #systemschange #climateresilience #crewconsciousness https://lnkd.in/gKB7SHt5
