What a fun time I had at my very first Elevate conference with California Society of Association Executives (CalSAE)!
Here are just a few of the highlights:
- I got an inside peek into the minds of association executives
- I had meaningful conversations with well over a dozen new colleagues and future friends, most of which were held at the sunny patio bar
- I won not one but two prizes at the New Member orientation because I’m a raging nerd who also occasionally uses her Jedi powers to gain a competitive advantage
- I signed up to volunteer with my regional Council so I can continue connecting and serving throughout the year (shout out to So Cal peeps!)
- I caught up with old friends and Executive Directors I’ve worked with in the past
- I danced my butt off at the 80s party (You Shook Me All Night Long was epic!)
This organization is welcoming, fun, and filled with cool people in the association industry. I loved it.
I walked in nervous, not knowing if I’d feel comfortable, and I’m walking out feeling like a member of the CalSAE family.
If you are on the fence to join a community that’s calling to you because of nervousness or uncertainty, I encourage you to GO FOR IT! Don’t let fear or inertia stop you.
Collaboration and strategic co-creation are waiting on the other side.
And you may even get to rock the dance floor with neon bracelets and a side ponytail!

Thank you ABC4 for the article on how Chris & I are working to create safe spaces to talk about #professional#failureFuckup Nights Salt Lake City is a global speaker series that shares stories of professional failure and the lessons learned.
🙌🏽WHAT: Each event we host, we have 3 to 4 speakers stand on stage, and share their unique story of professional failure, and the lessons learned.
✌🏼CONNECTION: the playful connection activities, stories shared, and debriefs all allow speakers and the audience to share stories of their failures.
👍🏾LESSON: We don’t learn by seeing the shiny finished product of success. We learned from each other by discussing our failures.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨?
I get this question a lot whenever I travel and I feel I must get better at answering this.
So here goes.
And please use the comments section below because your insight on the subject greatly aids my thinking.
Basically through a process of trial and error, over the years, I have puzzled out where my strengths lie and how best I can utilise these to help others.
I would love to be able to tell you that my talent was of global significance, eg. start a charity to eliminate poverty or perhaps to release my creativity and create a great work of art, or through research discover a new life-saving drug. But I've discovered that is not where my talents are to be found.
I'm an enthusiast, I'm driven, pathologically focused on helping others (often forgetting to ask if they want my help), passionate about those subjects I care about, internationally focused and with a talent to convince others to help me build communities aligned around a common goal.
My experience and expertise are in the field of business or as we call it today entrepreneurship, investment and innovation.
So this self-analysis has led me to accept that I'm a "Community Builder".
Never a career I could have imagined and to be honest I would never describe it as a "job".
Interestingly I didn't know this until I started doing it and succeeding, but it's the phrase that seems to best describe what I spend most of my time doing.
So to answer the question I posed, my why is to help others and the way I do this is by helping them access these communities I've helped build.
And I can't stop doing it!
I devour content on strategies, technologies and methodologies to ensure these communities thrive. I also spend much time thinking about how we build resilience into these "products of imagination" to ensure that they flourish without the need for my hands-on involvement.
I think I'm like early-stage capital. Critical to getting the project up and running but ultimately I need to be replaced if scale is to be achieved.
And trust me, to deliver a mission you must scale up.
Interestingly I'm still not sure why the "Scottish thing" matters so much in everything I do but it does seem to be a critical component in the fire that drives my passion.
In my latest TEDx talk, I try to share what drove me to the understanding that the development of communities or ecosystems was the game changer in business. Check it out and see what you think.
ps. The rain (or Scottish weather as it was described at a meeting today) has finally stopped here in DTLA. New records have been set for the amount of rain to fall in one 24-hour period. And for me, I'm close to inbox zero :)

Energetic Founder / CEO of The Wellbeing Farm B Corp Certified events venue in Lancashire - delivering fun, unique and sustainable corporate events, weddings and parties.
"I've had another crazy idea..."
I've had this idea brewing in my head and I can't let it go!
I am so excited about this idea, just as excited as the last time I felt compelled to create something and that was The Wellbeing Farm : B Corp Certified venue experience
This is an exclusive look into my new crazy idea...
The back story
Every year we have an annual B Corp Fest, a chance for people to learn about the movement, meet like-minded people and grow their business.
As the event is so inspiring, people leave wanting to implement their B Corp plan as soon as possible and ask how to do this. I always get loads of messages afterwards.
Which got me thinking...
Could there be a membership for business owners and leaders who want to start their B Corp journey and learn from a business who is demonstrating these values daily, look after their health and wellbeing, and be part of a support network who are going through the same thing together!
The idea...
Sometimes the best way to portray an idea is in video format, so here's all about my new crazy idea: https://lnkd.in/ezCJu8sh
How can I sign up?
At the moment I'm offering a special founding member price. This will be £77 plus vat per month. It will be significantly more when we officially launch in July.
As an added bonus, if you become a founding member, you will also get a FREE ticket to B Corp Fest which takes place on Wednesday 5 June 2024.
My aim is that years from now, we'll look back on this and say 'do you remember when...".
If you'd like to join me in this new endeavour, send me a private message by Monday 13 May at 5pm
Cheers to crazy ideas and making them happen! 🥂
P.S. Hope you saw us on BBC Breakfast too this morning...

🌟 Defining #MyNorthStar illuminated the common thread in all of my endeavors, which was no easy feat.
💕 When Lis Best sent the North Star prompt to our Girls Club Collective cohort, I winced. I never felt like I had a singular purpose or vision.
🧜♀️ 👩💻 So many seemingly disparate interests. So little time. 👩🎤 🧙♀️
I sat with it for a couple of days, as Drew Taylor Cohen knows.
✨ My first thought was that I had a constellation, not a North Star. After quite a few hours of contemplation, a pattern emerged. Access is my North Star.
✍ During my humanitarian aid career, nothing angered me more than the changing jargon. I saw it as a way for the fluent English speaking, mostly white, "experts" to gatekeep their senior positions, whilst non-English speakers were always playing catch-up. But the concepts remained the same.
🍷 Over a decade ago, I wanted to be a sommelier. I envisioned making delicious wine available to people any price point.
👩💻 In my work as a fractional COO, I demystify seemingly complex operations issues for my clients to ensure smooth implementation. It allows them to focus on their vision.
🗺 The Boring Stuff, my new content brand, helps people get through various types of adulting scenarios that many people find overwhelming.
Thank you, Lis, for prompting me to delve into my why.
🌠 What's your North Star?
