To my friends in o&g. . .What do you see as 'energy literacy', and what do you wish people knew? Please answer below! Last week I enjoyed the joint meeting of the Petroleum Engineering Department Heads Association and Society of Petroleum Engineers where a good deal of time was dedicated to outreach and education outside of the industry. In retrospect, though, I realized that I'm not sure there is a consensus on what that is. If we can achieve a functional list, then I'll write a column to explain those ideas. Does energy literacy mean knowledge? Of what? Or does it mean conclusions about the facts? Which conclusions? Please contribute your ideas below. At 59 years old, with 37 years of energy industry experience. The question was asked of me recently “When did I become an expert” My answer was two told, firstly an expert is something with both knowledge and wisdom of a specific skill set, which I feel I have acquired over time. And secondly you can only truly become an expert once you have “learnt all there is to learn” in a certain field. So in essence, we can really only call ourselves knowledgeable, experienced and competent and with a level of wisdom learnt from both failure and success. But an expert ??

In the electricity and energy field, technical studies are important for keeping the power system stable and efficient. But what some people might not realize is that the success of these studies depends a lot on the environment where engineers work. Let me tell you the story of two engineers who faced similar challenges but had very different results, and how their work environment made all the difference. Engineer Rami was asked to do a technical study for a new renewable energy project. The study was complicated and needed a lot of accuracy, but because his company supported him, he was able to do it with confidence. Rami worked under Engineer Saleh, who was not just a leader but also a mentor. Saleh gave him the guidance he needed and encouraged him to think deeply and creatively. Saleh believed that success comes from a positive work environment where employees feel appreciated. With this support, Rami finished the technical study with high accuracy, which led to good recommendations that helped make the project successful and stable for the long term. This result was not just a technical success but also improved team spirit and Rami’s confidence in his abilities. On the other hand, Engineer Ahmed was given a similar task but worked in a very different environment. He was under the supervision of Engineer Abdulaziz, who did not give enough support to his team. Ahmed also felt stressed because he didn’t have enough resources or guidance. These problems caused him to complete the study poorly, leading to issues during the project’s implementation and service interruptions. The failure here was not because Ahmed lacked experience, but because he didn’t have the support he needed. This negative experience not only affected Ahmed but also hurt the performance of the entire team. These two stories show how a company’s treatment of its employees can make the difference between success and failure. At our company, we know that keeping employees happy and providing a supportive work environment are not just nice things to do—they are necessary for achieving good results and reaching our goals. When employees feel valued and supported, they can focus better, be more creative, and make the right decisions when it matters most. That’s why we are dedicated to creating a work environment that helps our employees grow and do their best work. In the end, happy and motivated employees are the key to successful technical studies. This is the foundation on which we build our success and long-term growth. #EmployeeWellbeing #WorkplaceCulture #EngineeringSuccess

Student researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are performing a study. This study seeks to evaluate a newly developed Justice-Embedded Requirements Engineering (JERE) process and tool prototype. JERE was created with the goal of enabling engineers to consider and integrate energy justice principles in the design of clean, renewable, and energy efficient technologies. You can find more information about the study and JERE below. Teams of 2-8 people who are interested in participating can fill out this short interest form: https://lnkd.in/eSqZsbjM The study will include two 2-hour virtual workshops and will be maxed out at 5 teams. Please support our GT student researcher, and former SEI JG Campbell Award Winner Bettina Arkhurst in her dissertation research by circulating this information to research teams who may be willing to devote a small amount of time to this project. All team members will have to meet the following criteria: - Currently researching, engineering, designing, and/or demonstrating technology in the energy sector* - Be a fluent English speaker - Live in the United States or a territory of the United States - Be able to give written consent - Be 18 years of age or older Teams working on proposals can also participate. *Here, we take a broad view of the "energy sector," including but not limited to projects or proposals focused on: demand- or supply-side energy infrastructure or products, energy resilience, electricity or the electric grid, climate mitigation, improving process efficiency, material discovery related to the energy sector, projects or proposals geared towards U.S. Department of Energy initiatives, relevant software or hardware development, and so on.
