Tired of reading articles from 2021? How2Power.com is released every week full of interesting articles! I know I know, most of you read the Magnetic Agnostic Language article when it released a couple of weeks ago, but if someone was on holidays can go now and read along the rest of articles for this month! And if you are interested in #opensource and #magnetics, come to our next meeting for creating a common language for transformers and inductors!
If you're curious about opportunities for power electronics in the fast growing, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), see Kane Jia's article in the recent issue of How2Power Today, which also features more details of the Magnetic Agnostic Structure, an open-source power inverter design, power highlights from CMSE and more. https://lnkd.in/eaZWCA63

Does early energy modeling allow designers to save energy, transferring cost from mechanical to envelope? Better envelopes reduce loads which reduce mechanical system size in many cases, also increasing comfort and passive survivability. It's an open question. The theory is on the left chart. We've seen it work at LMN. But practitioners (pie charts on the right) are not seeing this cost-neutral energy savings occur very often, for a variety of reasons, but believe they can occur much more often with better energy modeling practice and coordination. What have you seen on your projects? Survey here: https://lnkd.in/gV6GBTua Sometimes better graphics can help with energy modeler->architect communication: https://projectstasio.com/ From the Path To Zero Carbon series 12: Envelopes: https://lnkd.in/d3Tin2aq #PathToZeroCarbon

🔋 We have amazing news for RatedPower users: you can now hybridize your plant with DC-coupled BESS! After the successful release of AC-coupled BESS, now RatedPower customers can also design a DC-coupled BESS, with the benefits associated to it: efficiency, simplicity and DC clipping. Users can now compare the benefits of DC-coupled BESS against AC-coupled BESS and check which technology is best suited for each project, and in just minutes! As always, pvDesign generates all the documentation required for the basic engineering of a DC coupled BESS: design, bill of materials and design report. Check out this article to learn more about this new feature and what it means (or could mean) for you 👇.

I mentioned in a previous post that battery technology is improving all the time. I was chatting to Lindsay from McKay about this the other day and asked him about the biggest changes he’s seen since we developed the concept of Ika Rere - in other words, how are we doing this differently for the next project? He said: First of all we need to acknowledge what a phenomenal success Ika Rere has been. A really collaborative design process across all engineering and marine disciplines meant that the best decisions for the project were made all the way through. This applied to the battery selection, sourcing, and liquid thermal management design which was nailed right from the start. The end result was a 1st of type marine vessel, that ended being lighter, faster, and with greater range than was designed, while at the same time using world leading electric propulsion, battery, and control/HMI technology. So did everything go 100% right? Of course not. We have dozens of lessons learned on the electrical side alone. Plus battery technology is advancing rapidly and the next Ika Rere will have 30-40% more energy density. So the next vessel will be another step forward on what has been a phenomenal success. Among the advantages provided by high voltage batteries involve greater power density, better efficiency, and a decrease in electrical losses during energy transfer. Furthermore, lighter and more compact designs are frequently made possible by higher voltage systems, which improves overall performance in a variety of applications.
