An experimental fighter jet has squared off against an F-16 in the first-ever artificial intelligence-fueled dogfights, the Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency said. 📰 The successful effort to have the X-62A VISTA engage in practice aerial combat could help the Air Force further refine its plans for autonomous drone wingmen known as collaborative combat aircraft. The Future Of Fighter Jets: AI And Unmanned Aerial Combat: The U.S. Air Force's "Skyborg" program, launched in 2019, demonstrated compatibility with unmanned aircraft from various contractors in 2020. In its 2023 budget request, the Air Force indicated plans to further the research into the Autonomous Collaborative Platforms program. AI is designed to augment, not replace, pilots. Really incredible footage here. While I typically think of FPV and drones in the world of Drone Racing, its applications within military and surveillance is of course, massive. As the production costs and efficiency of FPV rigs become cost effective, their utility and presence will only increase.

A model of the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) KF-21 Boramae fighter, is being displayed at World Defense Show. A South Korean delegation made an unannounced visit to Saudi Arabia on 23-26 January, meeting with Dr Khalid bin Hussein Al-Biyari, Saudi Arabia’s deputy defence minister, and other officials. The two sides reportedly discussed the joint development of an advanced fighter based on the design of the KF-21. While some reports suggested the resulting aircraft would be a fifth or sixth-generation multirole fighter, this appears to be an ambitious claim. Though the KF-21 bears some resemblance to the Lockheed Martin F-22 and F-35, the aircraft is not yet a low observable (LO) or ‘stealthy’ design, carrying its weapons externally/semi-conformally, and not having the kind of surface coatings that the US stealth fighters have. As a first step, KAI will produce a two-seat KF-21 variant with manned/unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities and, under current plans, will upgrade the Block 2 KF-21 to an LO configuration, which would make it a fifth-generation fighter. KAI has also proposed developing a Block 3 KF-21l, which it classes as a sixth-generation fighter. This aircraft would be larger, more stealthy and more capable, with more powerful engines, and operating as part of a ‘system of systems’ with unmanned effectors and adjuncts, building on the MUM-T effort. A small UAV known as air launched effects (ALE), will be integrated with an FA-50 Fighting Eagle under a technology demonstration programme, before a larger AAP is integrated with the KF-21, which will control “at least four” of these small UAVs. The United States Air Force has selected Anduril Industries and General Atomics to build and test production-representative Collaborative Combat Aircraft (#CCA) as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (#NGAD) program. CCAs are autonomous unmanned aircraft designed to cooperate with crewed fifth- and sixth-generation fighters in a "loyal wingman" role. Key points: 1. The Air Force plans to procure 200 NGAD fighters and 1,000 CCAs, with each CCA costing about a quarter to a third of an F-35. 2. CCAs will have a modular design, with some configured for weaponry and others for additional systems. 3. The program aims to deliver CCAs at a speed, cost, and scale to counter the pacing threat. 4. Anduril and General Atomics will build production-representative CCA vehicles and conduct test flights, while Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman will remain part of the broader industry partner vendor pool for future efforts. 5. The Air Force is on track to make a competitive production decision for the first increment of CCA in fiscal year 2026 and field a fully operational capability before the end of the decade. 6. Planning for CCA Increment 2 development is ongoing, with initial activities starting later this year, and all current and potential future industry partners competing for this follow-on effort. 7. The Air Force is exploring international partnerships as part of the CCA program to provide affordable mass at scale and drive interoperability across international partnerships.
