PG&E, in partnership with Paulsson Inc. and UC Berkeley, is revolutionizing pipeline safety in seismic-prone areas of Central and Northern California. Leveraging a PHMSA grant, they've installed innovative distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technology on gas transmission lines. This groundbreaking approach enables accurate, real-time monitoring of pipeline strain without the need for costly excavations. Originating from a successful small-scale trial on the Hayward Fault, the technology has now been expanded to a major installation over the Calaveras Fault near Gilroy, completed in May 2023. ESI was represented yesterday on the National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium Advisory Group’s Quarterly call. The NOWRDC's RDAG is a mix of academia and industry that meets to advise on upcoming solicitations, advance related scientific research, and address pressing issues facing the offshore wind industry. This particular call focused on floating wind solicitations, transmission technologies and design, and the use of autonomous monitoring tech. Despite some recent setbacks in the sector, most of the proposed domestic projects will still be built albeit in some cases after rebidding which will cause longer timelines.
