What is the difference between Processors, pipelines, and queues in Splunk?
splunkd is a distributed C/C++ server that accesses, processes, and indexes streaming IT data. It also handles search requests. splunkd processes and indexes your data by streaming it through a series of pipelines, each made up of a series of processors.
Pipelines:
Inside splunkd, we have many pipelines used for different functionalities such as parsing, forwarding, indexing, etc.
Pipelines are single threads inside the splunkd process, each configured with a single snippet of XML.
Processor:
Inside each pipeline, we have multiple processors. Each processor is reusable C or C++ functions that do a specific job such as line breaking, regex replacement, character encoding, etc.
Queues:
Between one pipeline to another pipeline, we have a queue system in Splunk. Data passes through queues across pipelines.
Queues are like holding areas where data waits for its turn to be processed by the next pipeline.
