Why don’t we see scientists with extremely opposing opinions in the current world? In today's scientific landscape, it's rare to witness the vibrant clashes of opposing ideas that once propelled scientific breakthroughs. Consider the early 20th century, when Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein passionately debated the nature of quantum mechanics and atomic structure, with Bohr supporting the Copenhagen interpretation and Einstein famously asserting, "God does not play dice." Another striking example is the fierce rivalry between Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison over the use of AC versus DC current, a debate that shaped the modern electrical systems we rely on today. The field of biology saw similar disputes, such as the intense disagreements between James Watson and Rosalind Franklin over the structure of DNA. In chemistry, the heated debates between Gilbert N. Lewis and Irving Langmuir on the nature of chemical bonds and valence electrons drove advancements in molecular chemistry. These scientific duels were not just about ego; they were fundamental to the progress of science. However, contemporary research often seems to prioritize incremental novelty over groundbreaking opposition. Radical ideas or challenges to established paradigms can struggle to gain acceptance or funding, leading to a homogenized scientific discourse. This trend raises concerns about the suppression of potentially revolutionary theories. What do you think? The circular economy industry cannot agree on a definition that unites everyone Walter R. Stahel. You continually denigrate 'recycling' when in fact, how else can we manage resource use or create innovative new materials? The fact is the circular economy is built on a returns system, and to make that work, you require everyone to participate. For all of the Circular Rs to function you require everything to come back to a point where it is re-utilised or reprocessed. Instead of using this language, you and many others much prefer to use the term 'recycling' as a way to say what the circular economy is not. What better way to confuse people. Unfortunately, the circular economy will not move quickly unless there is a common definition - an highly unlikely outcome. The sustainability industry was in exactly the same place for many years until industry said "ENOUGH!!" forcing common definitions and an alignment in reporting systems. We do not have time for the circular economy to grow up!!

The Stony Brook University team's been working on this rad tech that lets quantum memories (think of them as super-smart hard drives) work perfectly at room temp. This is HUGE 'cause usually, quantum stuff needs to be colder than a polar bear's toenails to work. But not this time! This breakthrough means we're a giant leap closer to quantum repeaters, the magic beans needed to grow the quantum internet beanstalk. Quantum repeaters are like the relay racers in the quantum world, passing info over long distances without losing the quantum coolness (or "entanglement" for the nerdy crowd). Stony Brook's discovery is like finding out you can run your relay without getting tired. They've got this tech patented. Yeah, you heard that right. They're not just talking the talk; they're walking the walk with legal papers in hand. Future's looking bright as they dive deeper into making quantum internet no longer just a pipe dream. The best part? It's a team effort with global vibes. Collaboration with Qunnect Inc., and some smart cookies from the Università degli Studi di Padova in Italy means this isn't just a Stony Brook win; it's a win for the whole planet.
