Great news for quantum research in the Netherlands and for the Dutch quantum technology ecosystem: quantum tech, and with four other major projects, will receive the final stage of funding by the National Growth Fund as well. (The €615 million you may have heard about were a pledge, with funding to be awarded in conditional stages.) I think it’s extremely cool that a small country likes ours has the vision to invest in innovation and future technologies with such commitment. This will certainly help maintain the strong research position that the Netherlands has reached in this field, and further accelerate valorisation.

A crucial step taken in the Netherlands, to now strongly and explicitly support the energy transition manufacturing industry. The new backbone of the energy economy. At the Netherlands Enterprise Agency we work very hard to get excellent plans in, as from October 1st. Even more work is done at many companies around the country to make these very plans. And perhaps it is no coincidence that the International Energy Agency (IEA) very recently brought out a report with exactly the same title https://lnkd.in/efvbuJaY. It’s an amazing report which for instance highlights that the year-on-year growth of this sector is 70%. Now, that’s a sector you want to be in. More importantly, perhaps, is that the report intends ‘to provide decision makers with an analytical toolkit to design and evaluate their strategies for clean technology manufacturing’. I was glad to see that the IEA includes policy incentives for manufacturing industries explicitly in its recommendations – always good to agree with the IEA. But beyond that the IEA comes up with a thought provoking list of 6 building blocks of a policy strategy that truly builds this sector. These include building domestic (I read: European) markets, shortening and securing supply lines, and ensuring the societal embedding of rapidly growing industries. Building a sector relies on much more than (energy) costs alone, nothing is lost for the EU or the Netherlands. This sector can and will grow and flourish in our part of the world. As it hopefully also does in others.

STEM research and education are essential for our big societal transitions.

What would you do when you are the boss of an organization, and you must make a decision that could greatly impact the employees? One option is to provide your employees with all the options, inform them about the consequences of each option and ask: 'what would you do - and why?'. At least, that's what the University of Technology of Delft (TU Delft) did. Question on the table: Is it desirable for the TU Delft to continu cooperation with the fossil industry, and if so, under what conditions? Happy to be a part of this! Results will follow in the beginning of next year.

Good news! Four large infrastructure companies announced the launch of the Coalition "Sturen op Brede Welvaart", supported by Impact Economy Foundation & NGinfra, and includes Alliander, Stedin, Enexis Groep, Gasunie, and NGinfra. This coalition marks a significant stride in fostering collaboration between large infrastructure companies and taking the next step in realising an energy transition that contributes to broad prosperity (in Dutch: Brede Welvaart). Central to their commitment, is using impact information for transparent impact reporting and informed decision-making. With the help of Impact Institute, these companies have started measuring, reporting and managing impact. We facilitated the first steps in their impact journeys, helped set-up impact reports and collaborated on impact cases. We look forward to helping these and other organisations with our expertise, advisory and implementation capabilities. #bredewelvaart #impacteconomy #csrd

Social institutions are never, and have never been "neutral" - the idea that institutions are a-social and a-historical is a fantasy created by economists and mathematicians in the late 19th century for the convenience of their models, it doesn't represent real life. The real question is (to paraphrase Stefan Collini): what are universities for? The answer to that question cannot be neutral, almost by definition. I see two competing value-laden answers in this exchange: the perspective of the authors of the Volkskrant piece, which is that universities serve to maintain the the market-driven, individualistic socio-economic and political order established after WW2 and accelerated after the 1970s. And the viewpoint of Derk Loorbach, which I share, that the purpose of universities is to participate in creating a habitable planet and functioning society within material and political conditions that are rapidly becoming more hostile to the classical liberal vision of market-driven "invisible hand" ethics. I understand emotional attachment to individual choice and market-economics, I really do. I don't like Hans Rosling's work much, but I agree with him here: these things have served a lot of people well in the past 50 years (and not just wealthy White men!). But now we hit a wall of hard physical facts - ethics discussions will do little to sway thermodynamics and biochemistry. So, yes, let's drop the claims to neutrality have an open discussion on institutional ethics and values, but a discussion on values guided by a scientific understanding of the changes in material conditions is more likely to be productive than one that is not.
