✨Yesterday we celebrated the opening of the Quantum Delta Leiden field lab! 💡The field lab is focused on developing low-temperature quantum Scanning Probe Microscopy (qSPM), also known as quantum microscopy, and comprises a testbed for qSPM in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator. 🚀 The facility, powered by Quantum Delta NL, is now available to companies, end-users, researchers and educators in the area to explore applications of qSPM in quantum metrology for quantum computing, semicon computing, and pharmaceutics, thus forming a crucial part of the Leiden ecosystem. 👏 Congratulations to the teams at Onnes Technologies, Leiden Cryogenics, and Leiden Spin Imaging for making this happen! And a special thanks to Max Kouwenhoven, Arlette de Waard, Clara I. Osorio Tamayo, and Philippe Bouyer for highlighting the significance of this milestone.

🚀 Big news: our Quantum Leiden field lab is now officially open! Companies, end-users, researchers and educators in the area can now use this facility to explore and test use cases. This testbed for quantum scanning probe microscopy (qSPM) in a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator is one of the four field labs supported by Quantum Delta NL. We are very grateful for their support. 🙌 Max Kouwenhoven from Onnes Technologies and Arlette de Waard from Leiden Cryogenics opened the event, and Clara I. Osorio Tamayo & Philippe Bouyer stressed how important such facilities are for our ecosystem. The Advanced Photon Source (APS) has long been one of the world’s best X-ray light sources. Now, with a comprehensive upgrade nearly completed, the renewed APS is emerging brighter than ever. Its new X-ray beams will be up to 500 times brighter than before. As we celebrate the transformation and the exciting science to come, let’s take a moment to look back at how it all started – https://bit.ly/3LkweTU The APS broke ground in June 1990 and achieved its original “first light” in March 1995. Since then, it has been used by thousands of scientists over the years to conduct experiments for the betterment of humankind. Nearly 30 years later, the upgraded APS’s “first light” signals the start of a new era of X-ray science and discovery as scientific beamlines return to operation throughout the rest of the year.

Visit from the German university HAWK - University of Applied Science and Arts From the German university came a visit in the composition of prof. Christoph Gerhard, Dr. George Avramidis, Dr. Martin Bellmann and Mcs. Andreas Tuemmel (who spent a week at our institute in March 2024). Together with dr. Kelar and dr. Kelar Tučeková are working on the project: Functionalization of fibers by plasma-assisted deposition of layers under #atmospheric pressure and advanced analysis of layer thickness by #laser-#excited #plasma #spectroscopy (8J23DE002).

Atomic-scale X-ray imaging is important when looking into designing and building more efficient quantum computers for example. That is why, we would like to draw your attention to a paper fresh of the press, where a few hundred gallium atoms inside an otherwise pure silicon crystal could be detected. A great example how light sources work together to gather insights and drive innovation. These measurements serve as benchmark for sensitivity measurements at third-generation storage rings achievable today. The next generation of storage rings, like DESY's future project PETRA IV, the boosted brilliance will enable even greater sensitivity right down to single atoms coming into focus. #photonscience

I am very pleased to have our paper published in Small Methods: https://lnkd.in/eR--7Kda Our work quantifies the sensitivity of the x-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy in the hard x-ray nanoprobe beamline at the NSLS-II synchrotron facility. The sensitivity is sufficient to identify a single isolated feature of only 3000 Ga impurities (a mass of just 350 zg) in bulk Si. With increased integration, 650 impurities can be detected. This is a result of a nice collaboration between the University of Surrey (Advanced Technology Institute (ATI)), the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the University College London, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY. A new paper by the NOVO Collaboration is out: https://lnkd.in/dscVpM8x The paper explores the most critical properties of bar-shaped OGSs (Organic Glass Scintillators) for applications to range verification in proton therapy, specifically in the NOVCoDA prototype that will be used for simultaneous imaging of the spatial distributions of fast neutrons and prompt gamma-rays. The first author of the paper is Joey Turko who deserves a strong acknowledgement of the hard work put into data collection, data analyses as well as the writing of the manuscript. I cannot thank enough all our colleagues at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) who put in a great effort to finalize this work and get the results published. It was an absolute highlight to provide the theory for this impressive experiment. We used a multi-physics approach to model each step of the experiment from real-time TDDFT to surface hopping and coupled-cluster theory. We extract not just spectral data about geometry changes and electronic character, but also resolve the creation and dephasing of electronic and nuclear quantum beats – the inherent characteristics of coherent superpositions of molecular eigenstates. Work done during my time at Max Planck School of Photonics, Friedrich Schiller University Jena. #chemistry #attosecondscience #physics

New publication in Nature Photonics: We show how the time-energy coherence of attosecond soft-x-ray spectroscopy allows disentangling the entire time history of molecular ring-opening. The MAX IV Laboratory is a Swedish national synchrotron laboratory that has operated as a user facility since 2016. MAX IV offers access to 16 beamlines that provide modern X-ray spectroscopy, scattering/diffraction, and imaging techniques to contribute to solving scientific questions in a wide range of areas. MAX IV is the first worldwide realisation of a fourth-generation light source, which has opened opportunities to develop experimental techniques based on outstanding brightness and coherence. The beamlines are open to academia, research institutes, industry, and government agencies worldwide through the user access programs. MAX IV welcomes 1700+ users annually, expected to double in the coming years.
