What DEI efforts are making an impact on the life sciences? This #PrideMonth, we’re amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices in the industry. Julio Rojano, Molecular and Cell Biology Research Associate and PRIDE ERN Co-Chair Vertex Pharmaceuticals, shares: "As co-chair for our PRIDE ERN [Employee Resource Network], culture, career and community are spaces we drive positive change from across all our functions. One initiative we successfully implemented was our Self-ID campaign, where we hope to support representation, hiring transparency and expand LGBTQ+ visibility. Our research, innovation, culture and transformative medicine depends on the principle of inclusion, diversity and equity (ID&E). As part of the ID&E Hub team our ERNs are able to effectively represent members across different affinities. As a 'Vertexian,' I am excited to see what we can achieve next in science and in the space of ID&E."

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, and this month serves as a reminder of the importance of regular screenings and self-examinations. The efforts to fund research and provide support for patients and survivors during October are commendable and crucial in the fight against breast cancer. Similarly, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, represented by the purple ribbon, focuses on raising awareness about domestic violence and providing support to survivors. Domestic violence affects individuals of all genders and backgrounds, making it essential to educate society about its prevalence and the resources available for those in need. This awareness month serves as a platform for survivors to share their stories and for communities to work together to prevent domestic violence. However, it's worth noting that October is also home to other important awareness days. For instance, October 10th is World Mental Health Day, emphasizing the significance of mental health awareness and support. Mental health is a global concern that impacts countless lives, and dedicating a day to it reminds us of the importance of reducing stigma, seeking help when needed, and supporting one another. October is also LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the history, achievements, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. It's an opportunity to raise awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, foster inclusivity, and promote equality. Let us recognize that there are multiple important causes deserving of our attention in October. These awareness days remind us of the collective responsibility we share in addressing various challenges that affect individuals and communities around the world.
