I was always skeptical and wary of "unlimited" vacation policy in the workplace. Here is a great article from Inc. magazine on this topic: https://lnkd.in/gnDkcyjW -- and with a very fitting headline: "Scam of the Century: Unlimited Paid Vacation". Employers should respect their emoyees' needs to take off set period(s) of time during a year for vacation or other personal reasons (eg to care for sick relatives). Further, accruals of vacation (and sick) time should be allowed if all of it was not used up during a given year (instead of having "use it or lose it" type policy). There should also be a cash pay-out option for any unused vacation time if an employee chooses to do that. For instance, an employee may not be able to afford a vacation due to high cost (try going on a family vacation during "hot" vacation periods, such as, for eample, Spring break -- it is super expensive), and thus getting that unused vacation pay-out may help plan and pay for a vacation during the upcoming year. After all, hopefully, we all can agree that the employees earned it, and hence, it is up to them to decide what they want to do with their earnings.

Hot fun in the summertime? If you're making vacation plans, or reading this while you're kicking back with your toes in the sand, you're probably among those of us who make a conscious effort to use our vacation days. At BAM, we encourange our team to kick back and unwind with our unlimited PTO policy. In many countries, even here in, US employees are allotted 12 vacation days each year on average… and only take 11 of them. Of the countries surveyed, America comes last on the average number of vacation days allotted and the average number of vacation days taken, and, for the most part, it’s not even close.  Aside from Mexico, where workers clock more hours than any other OECD nation, and Japan, where employees didn’t use 7 of their 19 allotted days, most other countries make the US look like a nation of workaholics.  Per the Harris Research Partners report commissioned by Expedia (yes, the travel company), workers in Hong Kong were happiest to get stuck into their PTO pot, typically not leaving any of their average 26 vacation days unused. Meanwhile, Europeans were doing their utmost to prove Kellman’s maxim, with France, Germany, and the UK all granted at least 27 days of vacation.

Not using all your vacation days is basically the same as telling your boss to burn up your next paycheck. Vacation is something that is part of your overall compensation. Take full advantage of it and remember there is more to life than your job. 53% of Americans won't use all their vacation days this year according to a recent study by Expedia. The most cited reason is because, "life is too busy to plan or go on vacation". Please don't let this be you. Prioritize your vacations and time to yourself the same way (if not MUCH more so) as you do your work. A lot of companies are switching from PTO to flexible time off. On the surface this is great because it empowers the employees to not be confined to a restrictive vacation policy. But the reality is the exact opposite happens. Many studies show that unlimited time off results in employees taking LESS vacation than if they had PTO. So, it benefits companies at the expense of employees. PFC (and Nectarine!) have an unlimited vacation policy, but we take it one step further. It is required that we take one week off per quarter at a minimum. That way, we get the best of both worlds. The upside of not having to carefully allot our vacation days, but also not the downside of taking less vacation. As always, reminding you to build wealth by following the two PFC rules: 1.)
