According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner; 94% of the victims of these murder suicides are female. Also, 1 in 15 children are exposed to intimate partner violence each year, and 90% of these children are eyewitnesses to this violence. Bringing awareness can help us recognize it, report it, and prevent it. Don’t Normalize Abuse: As 16 Days of Activism comes to an end, be reminded that the call to action to end violence continues. Violent behaviour needs to be corrected. Introducing Safe Rooms, which are dedicated spaces in public places like shopping centres where victims of domestic violence can seek refuge and support.   Safe Rooms are designed to provide a safe haven for victims of domestic violence, where they can access a range of services and support without fear of judgement or retaliation. These rooms are typically staffed by a caseworker who is trained to provide emotional support, practical assistance, and referrals to other services such as counselling and legal advice.   Safe Rooms are a valuable resource for survivors of domestic violence, providing a safe, accessible, and personalised environment where they can access the support and assistance they need. By creating these spaces in public places, we can ensure that victims of domestic violence have the opportunity to seek help in a way that feels safe and comfortable for them, and to begin the process of rebuilding their lives. As we continue to work towards eradicating domestic violence, initiatives like Safe Rooms will play an important role in providing support and resources for those who have been affected. Tomorrow, our State Capitol will be raising a Purple Flag for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month began in October of 1981 - before I was even born. While much has been done to help survivors of abuse, the cycle of abuse continues in different forms. Post-separation abuse has become the next phase in the cycle that victims face when they leave their abuser. The abuse doesn't stop. It simply changes form. If you or someone you know needs help to escape an abusive situation, reach out for help. Create a plan. Tonight some of our team attended the Domestic Violence Lantern Vigil at the Gympie Duck Ponds. We stood in solidarity to remember the lives of those lost to domestic abuse and to raise awareness about the need for support, awareness, prevention and intervention in our community. We are a team who has a strong social justice compass. We are trauma informed and we fight for those who are the most vulnerable in our society. After the walk tonight, we reflected on the service and the victims whose lives have been affected or lost. We will never forget why we do this job and the important role we play in the lives of people who need us the most. We aren’t just a law firm; we stand in our community supporting victims of domestic violence. We are advocates for justice and dedicated partners in the fight against domestic abuse.
