Entangled atomic clocks 🕰 ⚛ In this paper, which I posted on arXiv a few weeks ago, we realize high-fidelity two-qubit gates between qubits encoded on an optical clock transition. These are the highest gate fidelities reported for alkaline-earth atoms and are competitive with other state-of-the-art quantum platforms! We further show how one can read the state of an atom without ever scattering a photon on it: by entangling it with another (ancilla) atom. If a photon is never scattered, then the measurement process can be repeated again and again! We then use these tools to address some long-standing questions in the field of quantum metrology: when and how can entanglement improve the precision of measurements? Curving Terahertz Signals Around Obstacles For 6G The first curved THz data link could boost faster data networks beyond 5G One major problem terahertz signals face is how they can be blocked by most solid objects. This means that, unlike Wi-Fi, terahertz signals generally require a direct line of sight between transmitters and receivers. This marks the first successful demonstration of quantum internet technology in a real-world, urban environment. Utilizing a technique known as photon-mediated entanglement, data was transmitted over a 35 km optical fiber loop spanning Cambridge, Somerville, Watertown, and Boston.
