To protect LGBTQ+ people's health, protect LGBTQ+ people's rights Ahead of IDAHOBIT (17 May) and Pride Month (June), we are calling on governments everywhere to protect the human rights of LGBTQ+ people. The realization of human rights for all people, including LGBTQ+ people, is an integral part of achieving universal HIV prevention, treatment, care and support. Progress towards the goal of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 has been powered by progress in protecting human rights. But laws, policies and practices that punish, discriminate against and stigmatize people obstruct access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care. We remind world leaders of their commitments to uphold all human rights for all people. As communities across the world stand up for rights, the United Nations is not only on their side but by their side. UNAIDS stands with LGBTQ+ people everywhere who are facing hate, discrimination and marginalization and calls for an end to their criminalization.

When a person living with HIV is on effective treatment, the levels of HIV in their blood will be so low as to be undetectable. Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have proposed a series of dangerous cuts to the federal budget. Specifically, the House Labor-HHS Subcommittee's draft FY 25 budget bill proposes the following cuts: -$190 million from Ryan White, -$214 million from CDC prevention funds, and -$15 million from the Minority HIV/AIDS Fund. Grindr accused of selling users' data on their HIV status 🛑 The world's biggest dating app for the LGBT community is allegedly sharing users' highly sensitive information for commercial purposes, including the date of their latest HIV test and HIV status. In 2021, Grindr was already fined €5,800,000 by Norwegian authorities for breaking #GDPR as it shared users' data without their consent with third-party companies for advertising purposes. 👉 How long before we realize that these tech giants have no regard for our #intimacy? Our recent short report in Sexual Health (with my lovely co-authors Drs. Mance Buttram and Matthew S. Ellis, PhD, MPE) found that individuals living in states with lower LGBTQ equality in the US were significantly less likely to be aware of #doxyPEP – an important evidence-based biomedical strategy that is effective at preventing bacterial STIs, particularly syphilis and chlamydia, among gay and bisexual men and trans women. An understanding of how social determinants of health structure the implementation of interventions is crucial. This has been clearly seen with HIV PrEP. We need more research focused on how social determinants of health impact the uptake of novel biomedical advances, with a distinct focus on equity and communities who are disproportionately impacted. Let's work to ensure that everyone who can benefit from #doxyPEP knows that it exists, how it works and has access to it. At this year’s AIDSWatch, advocates called on members of Congress to pass the Real Education and Access for Healthy Youth Act (REAHYA) which would support comprehensive, medically accurate, LGBTQ+ inclusive sexual education programs for youth. LGBTQ+ youth are often left out of sex ed curriculum, with REAHYA we can ensure queer youth are involved in these important conversations. With inclusive sexual education that provides information to youth on HIV testing, prevention and treatment, we can ensure that we end the HIV epidemic while empowering youth to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. As Vice Chair of The PACT, I have a message filled with hope for all youth: Today, on International Youth Day, we are reminded that this day is not just a celebration but a call to never give up. It’s a reminder to continue fighting for our rights and to ensure that every young person, in all their diversity, feels inspired and knows they can be a force for change. 💪✨ We know there are many obstacles in our path, but instead of weakening us, they make us stronger and more resilient. February is LGBT+ History Month and this year's theme celebrates the LGBT+ community's contributions to the field of #Medicine. 🌈🔬 Arguably one of the community's biggest impacts was in the development of modern #PatientAdvocacy, a topic we discussed with Neil Bertelsen as he relayed the story of how HIV patients shaped a whole new approach to patient/regulator engagement. "What happened in those last years of the 1980s was something that we hadn’t seen before: a genuine coming together of both the medical community and the patient community, where we became hand-in-glove, basically learning at the same speed."
