Co-Founder of Healthy Trailer LLC | Owner of Pam Young & Company, Inc. | Creator FSMA Transportation Compliance Plan | 'Laymen's Speak' Author | Student Of All Things Food Safety | Military Mom
“Is this a new thing this year?” This was the question a driver asked early one morning in Yuma about trailer sanitation. His trailer did not pass a ‘clean and sanitary’ inspection at a local shipping facility, and he was wondering if there was a new rule about how clean trailers needed to be prior to loading fresh produce. The driver was handling this frustrating situation well but felt that he should have had more notice about the trailer condition changes. Not knowing all the equipment sanitation protocols for each shipper, I couldn’t give any specifics about how to better avoid this problem in the future. But I did give him the typical Healthy Trailer LLC Trailer suggestions that can streamline this part of the loading process. This scenario happens all day, every day, at most fresh produce shipping facilities. We’ve been quantifying the costs of these delays to the shipper, the trucking companies, and the buyers, and it’s not an insignificant amount. We’re working on these details and will share them in the near future. But for today, showing how you can reduce the number of these events may help your shipping operations and alleviate driver stress. Like all of us feel when we are unprepared to comply with a requirement that is unclear or unknown, drivers feel frustrated when they are asked to comply with a protocol that has not been clarified and adequately communicated. FSMA’s Safe Transportation Rule doesn’t provide details about trailer sanitation, but it’s actually not complicated using a framework that includes these three ‘C’ hooks. Clarify: Define your ‘clean’ standard and/or requirements. Do you want a document to show the last clean? No debris (product, soil, packaging?) No chemical residue? What aligns with your food safety program? Communicate: Let your transportation suppliers know, in writing and more than once, what this standard is and how it will be enforced at the shipping facilities. Comply: Monitor and enforce your protocol. This includes everyone who manages the loading activities. Most drivers cooperate with shipping crews, but when someone from the shipping staff doesn’t enforce the protocol, confusion, and noncompliance creep back into the process. Get the first two hooks in place, and the third becomes much easier to implement. Our Yuma customer left Healthy Trailer LLC Trailer way happier than he arrived. Not only did he have a clean and sanitized trailer, but he also had a clear picture of what trailer sanitation should look like. #healthytrailerclean #safefoodtransportation
