Today, on Juneteenth, we celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. While this is an American holiday, it holds significance for Canadians as well. Canada and the United States share a long and complex history regarding slavery. The Underground Railroad brought many freedom seekers to Canada, where they found refuge and built new lives. Despite this there is still an ongoing struggle for racial justice on both sides of the border. Recognizing Juneteenth allows us to reflect on the ongoing need to dismantle systemic racism in Canada and the US. How Can Canadians Celebrate Juneteenth? 1. Learn about Black History in Canada and explore the stories and contributions of Black Canadians – past and present. Many resources are available online and in libraries. 2. Support Black-Owned Businesses: Seek out and support Black-owned businesses in your community. 3. Attend Local Events: Many communities hold Juneteenth celebrations or educational events. Participating allows you to learn more and connect with others. Juneteenth is a time to celebrate freedom, but it's also a reminder of the ongoing work towards justice. By acknowledging this shared history and taking action, we can build a more inclusive and equitable future for all. #Juneteenth #BlackHistoryCanada #Canada

**NEW REPORT** The Cultural Solidarity Fund (CSF) is an initiative administered by IndieSpace (formerly The Indie Theater Fund) with leadership by LEIMAY and a coalition of arts administrators and institutions that provides relief microgrants of $500 to artists and cultural workers including individual artists, administrators, production staff, custodians, art educators, ushers, guards, and more and prioritizes Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC), immigrant, disabled, d/Deaf, and trans and gender-nonconforming individuals who have been most severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Today we celebrate the anniversary of Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the last enslaved African Americans in the United States is declared free. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics, and family gatherings. One thing that’s clear about people of African descent is that nobody can doubt our contributions. Today, on #WorldDayofAfricanandAfrodescendantCulture, we celebrate the undeniable impact of the global Black community. Our resilience, art, patents and innovations – all roots of our heritage – played a foundational role in the progress we see each and every day. That said, the Government of Canada adopted the United Nations' International Decade for People of African Descent in 2018. This initiative guides federal and international actions that aim to advance the economic, social, cultural, civil, and political rights of people of African descent. This commitment, spanning from 2015 to 2024, stands as a testament to the ongoing pursuit of equity and empowerment. While there is much work to do as a community, it’s also important that we commemorate how far we’ve come in shaping all aspects of society. #AfricanCulture #BlackCulture #AfricanandAfrodescendantPride

In this piece for The Conversation, I reflect on the incredible heterogeneity within #Black Canada today, including the recent and large waves of migration from #Africa. We need the language and attention span to make sense of both the collectivity and particularities of Black Canada. Around 60% of Black people in Canada were born abroad. While earlier generations of Black immigrants were mostly from the Caribbean, more recent immigrants are increasingly coming from African countries such as Nigeria and Ethiopia. This diversity intersects with different migration pathways and immigration statuses, class differences, unique cultural and linguistic influences, a multitude of religious traditions, and a variety of local and transnational social and political practices. That is...it matters! In public discourse and national remembering we need to continue the project of raising consciousness around the stories of historic Black communities in Canada, while also drawing attention to contemporary diasporic communities.

Together, let's reflect on our nation's history, the ideals of equality and equity and be aware of the systemic social injustices still experienced by many of our Black patients, colleagues and neighbors, who are disproportionately affected by poor health, social, economic and educational outcomes -- the causes of which are rooted in slavery. Today is Juneteenth. Juneteenth is a federal holiday that celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African American people in the United States. For this reason, the holiday is sometimes referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Additionally, Juneteenth is a day to reflect on the atrocities and inequalities that African Americans have faced throughout history and in the present day. Today, we honor Juneteenth, a significant milestone in American history. On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. This day represents the end of slavery in the United States and is a powerful reminder of the ever-enduring need to continue to fight for equality and justice.
