Peace Corps What do you know about the Peace Corps? The relationship of this American group with many countries in the world dates back to the Kennedy administration. President Kennedy’s executive order to setup the Peace Corps was issued on 1 March 1961. Hence, Peace Corps Week is centered on this date. For 2024, it takes place from 25 February to 2 March. Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) work in many sectors, such as research, community development and healthcare. However, the sector that takes a large number of volunteers is the field of education. Volunteers often serve for two years before going back to the United States. Subsequently, they are referred to as RPCVs - Returned Peace Corps Volunteers. Nigeria was one of the first countries to receive PCVs in 1961. A group known as the Friends of Nigeria (FON) comprises many RPCVs that once served in Nigeria. It’s noteworthy that the generation of PCVs from the 60s and 70s is steadily decreasing in size from natural causes. The experience of this generation has been documented in a number of books. I have one in my possession, ‘Far Away in the Sky’ by David Koren. It’s a book which charts the valiant humanitarian effort to ensure many Biafran children survived the war. Still, there is much to be gained and documented from the unique experience and capacity of this pioneering generation. Have you or your parents encountered PCVs? What episodes do you remember? With a team of Gender Advisors last week at the U.S. Naval War College, I enjoyed piloting a Systems Thinking approach to Gender Analysis exercise based on an Arctic region disaster scenario and operational mission involving diverse local, state, indigenous and federal role playing. It was a fantastic experience and an honor to be a part of this event and impressive line up of scholars, military and civilian practitioners and leaders in #womenpeacesecurity and integrating #genderperspective to inform crisis response operations. #Systemsthinking sharpens our understanding of reality by challenging biases, dealing w complexity, seeking new perspectives, avoiding cognitive shortcuts/ assumptions about the affected populations, considering potential unintended consequences and long-term effects of our actions. The aim, the core interest of both civ and mil actors in crisis contexts, should be to harness and support local knowledge, diverse perspectives including that of women and others whose voices and perspectives are often missing, and shore up their resiliency. Gender perspective and responsive actions, a #wps approach, if done authentically is essential to #localization and inherent to building org and community #resiliency, a core USNORTHCOM value.

This video picks up from my previous posts from earlier in the week that talked about some of the cultural clashes that we witnessed during the 1950’s and 1960’s. In addition, it picks up from the most recent post discussing Project 2025 and its agenda in promoting extremism in various forms of militarism and religious fervor under the guise of patriotism. In this video the content creator discusses the registration of men between the age of 18 and 24 for selective military service which is automatic and this process could be the potential first step in the event of reinstatement of a military draft similar to what occurred in the 1960’s and 1970’s during the war in Vietnam. This video analyzes the various reasons as to why military recruitment and retention rates have declined. In addition, even those who enlist to join are not accepted due to a lack of physical fitness requirements or the inability to pass the intellectual testing that is required for individuals to serve. While people in society want to criticize the “woke movements,” a lot of these movements came out of the civil rights, feminist, and gay liberation movements that originated during the 1950’s and 1960’s. These movements shaped and influenced society, popular culture, and American history.
