This news came out last week on food delivery company #Getir but it is worth highlighting because of the lessons it shows. To recap. Getir is pulling out of the UK, US, Germany and Netherlands to focus on its core Turkish market. The firm, which was once valued at $12.5bn saw its valuation cut to $2.5bn in 2023. It has raised further financing at an undisclosed level - my guess is the valuation has dropped further. Several lessons from this: 1. This is another example of how the ultra-loose interest rate environment which lasted until 1H22 encouraged firms to grow at all cost in a land grab mentality; 2. I sound old-fashioned but business fundamentals count. It should have been obvious to anyone on reflection that the market projections for food delivery several years back were based on unrealistic expectations / extrapolations from Covid that were unlikely to last; 3. Linked to this, the worst investment decisions are always when businesses rush. Considered thinking and / or a proper assessment of the risks generally goes out the window (I would put what happened with the studios and #SVOD in a similar category). 4. It pays not to be so blinkered re the Total Addressable Market (TAM). Investors assumed that everyone would follow the habits of urban 20s year olds who couldn't get off the couch. That is a more limited TAM than you think. 5. Also, these sorts of businesses which grow rapidly and need constant funds are also very attractive for the intermediaries - the banks, legal firms etc. That is not to say there is a deliberate incentive to push firms for growth but it is a consideration in a renumeration model which is often based on a commission. As usual, this is not investment advice.

Getir has raised (and spent) more than $2B of cash since 2020, and is now exiting all international markets to focus on developing a sustainable business in Germany. While Getir may have a viable business in Turkey, the failure across all Western markets is unsurprising: - Much higher labour costs vs home market - No investment in automation to offset higher labour costs - Smaller product selection (2,000 SKUs) vs. both online and offline competitors - Constantly on promotion to generate demand (i always have a 40% discount voucher available in my account) What is most surprising to me is the comment in the article that only 7% of revenues will be impacted by this retreat from all markets. So super-high operating costs, and no revenue to show for it! Viability for a business is ultimately simple - you need to generate cash at some point.
