Earlier today Meta confirmed that it has launched its latest open-source large language model or LLM, Llama 3. Meta also announced today that Llama 3 is already powering its meta.ai chatbot which has been available in the US since late last year and started trials in Nigeria and India last week. Meta also announced that it has deployed meta.ai as a search feature across its various platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. This is an interesting development because in doing so, and as more countries become part of the trialing of meta.ai, this means that Meta will be able to really stress test the Generative AI chatbot and by extension the Llama 3 LLM at scale as millions and eventually billions of users can access them. This is actually a good thing as it will enable the Llama 3 to get significantly better over time as more and more users access it via meta.ai. Another announcement from Meta today is that the meta.ai chatbot is now available in Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. This is genuinely interesting as there are 6 additional African countries where meta.ai is now accessible but not Kenya, yet?! That seems odd if you ask me given that Kenya is easily one of Meta's biggest markets in Africa but I am sure there is a good reason :) Going forward, one thing is clear - Meta is going all in on Generative AI in 2024 in a bid to have parity with other Big Tech players like OpenAI, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and others. Even if Meta was (seemingly?) late to the Generative AI party, the rate at which it is ramping up its capabilities in this space is staggering and my sense is that by the end of 2024, things may look very different from a competitive perspective.
