DYK? Freight railroads prepare for storms all year-round, putting safety and care at the front of all contingency planning. Before #TropicalStormDebby hit, they activated 24/7 monitoring and proactively stopped or parked trains in rail yards in the storm's path to safeguard workers and communities. ⛔️ #StormIsha - Our weather specialists confirm the forecast has worsened, with a high likelihood of damage to Scotland’s Railway. All passenger and freight services will be suspended from 19:00, with trains still on the network completing journeys under speed restriction. Lines will remain closed on Monday morning. Each route must be inspected by our engineers for damage and fallen trees/debris, which means it will be later on Monday before any trains can run. We will of course keep you up to date on our progress. This decision has been made to keep passengers and our people safe. The @MetOffice have warned that the storm will have a high impact, damaging buildings, homes, power networks, and transport infrastructure. Power cuts may occur and flying debris will also be a risk. Save $1000s on Infrastructure Asset Monitoring with Satellite Intelligence | Head of Commercial | Geofem Ltd
🚂 Ballast Fouling: A Perennial Challenge in Rail Infrastructure Ballast fouling, the infiltration of soil and debris into railway ballast, poses a significant problem worldwide. Whether caused by mud pumping, debris from trains, ballast attrition, run-off, or wind-blown dust, the consequences are dire: decreased track stability, improper drainage, and heightened maintenance costs. 🛰️ Leveraging Satellite SAR Data At GEOFEM, we’re revolutionising rail infrastructure management by harnessing the power of satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. SAR technology provides a unique perspective, allowing us to peer beneath the surface and uncover crucial details invisible to the naked eye. By detecting soil moisture – a key indicator of potential ballast fouling – we gain a competitive edge. 🌱 Proactive Soil Moisture Monitoring Our robust system combines SAR data with sophisticated algorithms to detect subtle changes in soil moisture levels along railway lines. This proactive approach empowers stakeholders to anticipate and address ballast fouling before it escalates into a full-blown crisis. 🔑 Key Benefits: Early Detection: Identify potential ballast fouling hotspots long before they compromise track integrity. Precision Maintenance: Target resources where they’re needed most, optimising maintenance schedules and minimising downtime. Cost-Efficiency: By mitigating the impact of ballast fouling, you’re not just saving money on repairs – you’re safeguarding your bottom line. 📞 Reach out to Geofem today to learn more about how your rail infrastructure can be better safeguarded against ballast fouling.

Floods bring chaos to Europe's railfreight services and river traffic Severe flooding in southern Germany has caused significant disruptions to Europe’s inland waterways and rail freight sector. The River Danube's water level has doubled, resulting in a 70% failure rate for rail services. Major routes, including those to Munich, have faced cancellations and delays, with many services rerouted. The Rhine River has also seen extreme water levels, leading to blockages and stoppages in cities like Mannheim and Frankfurt. The disruptions are expected to persist, severely impacting the intermodal and rail freight operations across the region. https://lnkd.in/gKprn8cd

Two-way traffic opening will make travel safer, faster at Falls Creek People travelling Highway 1 south of Spences Bridge will have faster travel times with the opening of two-way traffic two years after the road was severely damaged in the 2021 floods. Traffic will open to a single lane in each direction starting Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, on the Falls Creek Bridge (Jackass Mountain), located 55 kilometres south of Spences Bridge. A temporary single-lane bridge has been in place since a culvert washout in 2021. A new three-lane permanent Falls Creek bridge is under construction and will be completed next year. Quick Facts: **Falls Creek culvert on Jackass Mountain was washed out during the floods in November 2021. **Highway 1 through the Fraser-Thompson Corridor closed between Spences Bridge and Hope on Nov. 14, 2021, due to damage caused by heavy rains. **More than 150 workers, using 80 pieces of equipment, moved more than 150,000 cubic metres of gravel, rock and other material to repair and reopen Highway 1 to vehicle traffic on Jan. 14, 2022 (Lytton to Spences Bridge), and Jan. 24, 2022 (Lytton to Boston Bar). **There were 18 sites affected on Highway 1 between Hope and Spences Bridge, including four that required extensive temporary repairs to reopen.
