When people ask me, "Why haven't you left the Atlassian ecosystem in 16 years?" the answer is simple: The Atlassian ecosystem is friendly, a safe place to grow professionally, and incredibly diverse. This diversity makes it a unique environment to learn about other cultures or simply understand different perspectives. Diversity in all its forms is something I am passionate about because I genuinely believe that knowing, accepting, and trying to understand different ways of seeing the world makes us better people. And being better people makes us better professionals. That's why this year, when we were planning The Deiser Connection, our team agreed to showcase the unique characteristics of Atlassian's implementations across different systems of work around the world. 😒 Hosting your hackathon after hours? Think again. Expecting employees to participate in hackathons *outside of work hours* limits involvement and excludes those with family or other commitments. Instead, schedule it during the workweek to maximize participation and focus. Communicate company-wide, allow participants to adjust schedules, and why not even cover meals during the event? Last (but certainly not least!) get on the same page with your product team: no roadmap development during the hackathon, to prevent overloading the team. Developers don't talk enough with each other. Stand-up, noise-cancelling headphones on, lunch alone, and then back at it. It might feel like a minor issue, but I believe this behavior has significant consequences. When everyone just works comfortably on their own little island, it feels productive but it harms speed and quality. So, how do you get developers to come together? Make it fun to spend time with each other. Many developers love being on their own (including me), but in the end, we are part of a team. And there’s no I in team. 😉 For example, organize a session where developers work together. Call it a hackathon with pizza, and you'll see that much more talking happens than ever before. This also makes it much easier to connect on workdays. Do you ever organize a hackathon?

How cool is this?! At Atlassian, innovation isn't just a word they throw around – it's woven into the very fabric of their culture. I was amazed and impressed by 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐈𝐭: their quarterly 24-hour hackathon. 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬: teams from every corner of the company, spanning Engineering, Design, Legal, Finance, and more, coming together for a whirlwind day of creativity and collaboration. I think it’s like a superhero team-up, but for innovation! 𝘈𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘭𝘦!! But here's the kicker – ShipIt isn't your typical hackathon. Nope, it's where dreams become reality. Whether it's crafting cutting-edge product features, revolutionizing workplace processes, or even tackling global challenges, there's no limit to what they can achieve. 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞: Everyone, and I mean everyone, has a seat at the innovation table. No matter your background or expertise, your ideas matter.
