Telecom | Rakuten - Chris Hoare Rakuten announced yesterday that discussions are underway to integrate its FinTech businesses under one group. One of the key rationales lies in furthering its FinTech customer base while ensuring optimised allocation of resources and decision making. The ongoing discussion seeks to integrate Rakuten Bank (49.27% stake), Rakuten Card (51% stake), Rakuten Securities Holdings (which owns 51% Rakuten Securities, 100% in Rakuten Card and Rakuten Investments), Rakuten Insurance and other FintTech segments (excluding Rakuten Wallet) under one roof. Competition to attract customers using point cards has intensified in Japan. A number of companies offer point cards, including Rakuten Points, T Points, D Points, and others. In a market where there are many competing companies, the Sumitomo Mitsui Group has partnered with T Point and entered the new market as V Point. According to Rakuten, this decision aims to enhance collaboration across fintech services, facilitate prompt decision-making, and leverage data integration and AI utilization. The reorganization is expected to take place in October. Research by PYMNTS Intelligence indicates that consumers favor combining banking and other financial services into one place, particularly within a single app. Approximately 70% of U.S. and Australian consumers expressed interest in merging digital retail, grocery shopping, and bill tracking into an all-in-one app. Convenience-focused users prefer managing banking, investments, and shopping activities through such an everyday app. While online banking continues to gain popularity, traditional banks recognize the value of face-to-face interactions, especially for high-value transactions. These visits offer opportunities for cross-selling additional products and services. Telecom | Rakuten - Chris Hoare Rakuten’s topline trend was slower but overall losses eased further on lower mobile losses. Despite this, EBIT was still behind consensus this quarter (Q4: -¥33bn vs ¥-28bn consensus). Non-GAAP Mobile loss improved from ¥81bn to ¥71bn but the loss was still higher than expectations. Sequential MNO revenue remains weak in our view; only up by ¥2.6bn (Q3: +¥2.1bn). Offsetting this, profitability was strong in both EC and Fintech. This highlights the key reason for our short thesis – Rakuten’s issue is not that costs are too high, but revenues are too low. The group also skipped the dividend for this year. Group profitability remains tough as strong headwinds lie below the EBIT line.
