I have been LOVING seeing both Olympic and Paralympic athletes together in commercials lately, and I think this Nike commercial has to be my favorite so far. The commercial talks about the the seemingly negative personality traits that may be what drive athletes to win. To be clear, sportsmanship is incredibly important, and these competitive traits of an athlete are different; they come out when they're needed and don't keep someone from displaying sportsmanship. I love that adaptive athletes are included in the commercial because people often mistakenly assume that adaptive sports are slow and leisurely and that athletes with disabilities are just happy to be out there. While just being happy to be involved is definitely how some people approach it, and that's great, I can also say that athletes with disabilities are some of the most competitive people I've ever met (No comment on my own competitive nature.) and want to win, which I would attribute in part to how having a disability often requires us to fight for everything we have every day. We want to show people that we're stronger than the stereotypes of disability would have them believe and that we can not only be involved in sports but that we can win. We've been told so often what we can't or shouldn't do as people with disabilities that when we learn that we can strive for more, we work hard and show what we're really capable of. Striving for excellence takes determination, commitment, drive, resilience, and perseverance, and even if that might create some tense moments in how we show it, I'm so glad that people are getting to see people with disabilities that way.
