Our traditional photo spot for the incoming class of 2024! With four of our schools still to close their admissions, we could manage to accommodate everyone in a single photo. This marks the completion of our 6th transformational year of triggering a change in the country's educational landscape. When we announced our entry in the university space in 2016, we also opened the gates for design programs to be offered in colleges & universities. Since then, ~300 universities and ~3000 colleges have started offering design programs. Can you imagine the impact WUD had on the India's GER??? Even with the most conservative estimate, at least 1 lakh seats have been added in this space. WUD has come a long way. Incidentally, in the last year we also got the distinction of becoming the ONLY Platinum-graded university in India in Design Education. Our thought leadership has contributed to the creative sector being identified as a separate contributor to the GDP. Art biennale have become Art Architecture & Design biennale. The journey has been good so far and the future continues to look exciting. Mathematics and art have always fascinated me since childhood, though I was never formally trained in the arts. Apart from one year in the sixth grade, I never had an art teacher. I would often copy the sketches of Samir Biswas and Rathin Mitra. I had a quiet childhood, partly because I only learned Bengali at the age of eight. Being in a Bengali-medium school without knowing the language well made things hard. That’s why I withdrew into my own world with a pencil and pastel colors. People say there is mathematics in rhythm and art, and I found comfort in both. Unfortunately, everything else seemed out of reach. Parents, friends, relatives, and teachers worried that this combination of interests wouldn't lead me to the "right" career path. But as a child, I was a dreamer, much like the boy in *Taare Zameen Par*. Luckily, my parents were supportive and understanding. Things improved when I reached ninth grade, and I began to take a genuine interest in academics. Thanks to my significant improvement in grades, which I don’t think should be the sole measure of success, everyone around me felt relieved. I decided to take a middle path between engineering and art by pursuing architecture at IIT Kharagpur. Even as an IIT graduate, working in the creative field in India isn't easy. But I’m still a dreamer and believe in lifelong learning. To this day, if you pass by my house in the morning, you might hear the droning voices of online tutorials, as I continue to learn new and interesting things. A brand-new Cambridge degree - the first undergraduate course ‘designed from scratch’ for many years will merge arts and science in one degree. For the first time, the Design Tripos brings together architecture, engineering and materials science in a single degree. Blending technical content with design freedom, the course will offer a different kind of creativity, and a new approach to tackling societal and environmental issues, including poverty and climate action. Using practices of design and our understanding of how they influence people, economies and the natural world, the degree will be structured around hands-on, problem-based learning projects. “It’s pioneering – we’re merging the arts and sciences under the umbrella of creativity and design, and constructing the course to be as open and interesting as possible,” said Professor Michael Ramage. “We don’t know of any other single degree course that brings these three subjects together like this.” The Design Tripos – which will start in October 2024, and lead to a Master of Design (MDes). It is hoped the blended nature of the course will appeal to a wide range of students, and aims to help address gender disparity in design fields. Over the past three years, fewer than 40% of applications to Engineering and Physical Sciences at Cambridge have been from female students. Professor Graham Virgo, Senior Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education, said: “The Design Tripos will teach both the ‘know-how’ and the ‘know-what’ to help develop the next generation of pioneers and leaders in industry, public service and society. He pivoted back into academia after completing an MSc in #Applied_Carbon_Management in 2010/11 at the University of Glasgow and realised research was a viable way to explore different questions, such as "how we might design and manage the built environment to adequately respond to the convergence of crises". 🔹 What led you to become the director of MAUCA? "The MSc was a key turning point for me, and my thesis on #urban_resilience evolved into my #PhD at UCD. I was appointed as Assistant Professor of #Climate_Responsive_Design in UCD in 2020, and when the opportunity arose to become Programme Director of MAUCA, a couple of years after it had been set up by Dr Oliver Kinnane, I was keen to take it on and support students in exploring new subjects and finding new pathways for their careers, as I had in my own MSc experience." 🔹 What is special about MAUCA as an MSc to you? "Each year MAUCA brings together a #diverse group of students from different parts of the world, and of different ages and ethnicities. This can be a hugely interesting and rewarding experience, and allows the MSc to take on a very #international and #inclusive perspective. Mixed theories of teaching and practice. Cross-disciplinary courses and programs. Alternative modes of enquiry. Community and student engagement. Concepts of explorative learning. Multicultural perspectives on subjects. The combined arts and sciences of STEAM – to name but a few. The same hybridity is true of life and work. We value a work-life balance. We seek self-fulfilment in professional contexts. We see education as continual through professional development and life-long learning. The presentation that I spoke about today concerned a series of studies, and an overall project that has been developing during both the Spring of 2022 and 2024 for a Foundation level course in the School of Interior Design at Louisiana State University at the College of Art & Design. Utilizing the Readymade as an Instrument to Develop an Understanding of the Principles of Art + Design with Students as Related to the Interior. What I like to say to my students is one plus one is three. Or just think, imagine that one plus one is not two, outside of what you have been taught, what mathematics has instructed you to believe, what one may say or call the truth – to inspire them, to get them to be creative, to think outside of the box and to explore possibilities beyond and including all potentials. But of course, there are always different types of boxes, or in some cases, squares, or frames, pages, sheets of paper that could be considered the parameters for creation in some regards, but my aim, and desire, is to provide a space where to stretch the boundaries of the possible, of the creative spirit, that is the goal, that is the system from which to begin. Education is complex, in addition to the world being so, and our approach to cultivating this is just the start of our potential for expansion. Through the examination of a particular assignment, one that is concerned and focused around an established research trajectory (both of my own and many others), that of Marcel Duchamp’s readymade, objet trouvé, or found object, this paper will explore how an everyday item can be studied by students and reconstituted through certain principles of art and design in order to develop a framework for approaching the complexity of creativity and its connection to education. https://lnkd.in/efHhU5bD
