I'm thrilled to announce that I have joined the Journeys Metabolic team! I've said for many years that I am on a mission to "change the weight of the world." As part of this mission, I founded Heartland Weight Loss; the first insurance-based Obesity Medicine clinic in the Greater Kansas City area. Over the past five years, we have seen phenomenal growth, primarily driven by referrals from amazing clinicians in the area. In 2022, I opened a second location in Lawrence, Kansas (hiring Maribeth Orr, D.O., DABFM, DABOM to anchor that space). Again - success. The world clearly needs (and wants) brick-and-mortar Obesity Medicine clinics! However, scaling an in-person model bigger and bigger simply isn't my cup of tea - nor is it an effective way to bring evidence-based therapies to the masses. With the recent explosion of interest in this field, I have had multiple offers to partner with technology companies. I've never been opposed to the idea - it's a great way to effectively disseminate ten years of knowledge/experience to a bigger audience. Sadly, most of these tech startups are on a mission to either capitalize upon prescribing GLP-1 agonists to as many people as possible and/or promote the outdated, unscientific narrative of "eat-less, move-more" combined with some sort of motivational tool to help people embrace the misery that narrative creates. When I was approached by Journeys Metabolic and dug into their product, it was immediately clear that the leadership of this company gets it. The entire mission of the program is to help patients with metabolic health by focusing on repairing the underlying pathology that happens upstream (at the cellular level), which will inevitably have an impact downstream - improving all sorts of cardiometabolic diseases - including obesity. With a mission grounded in people and results (NOT prescriptions and profits) and a leadership team passionate about metabolic health, I couldn't NOT be a part of this company! I believe Journeys has what it takes to turn this epidemic of chronic disease around - at scale. I'm excited to see what happens as we explode into the marketplace in 2024!
Thrilled to announce Courtney Younglove, M.D., FOMA, FACOG, DABOM as Journeys Metabolic's new Chief Medical Officer! We're grateful for your everyday passion and solution-oriented approach to solving the metabolic health crisis at scale. Onwards and upwards. Welcome! I am enjoying the habit of boosting examples of leadership in action. Perhaps I should use it as a feature in the upcoming newsletter- Words can influence minds but actions build the future. Cheers to a brighter future in cancer care. Breaking News! Great news for Irvine & Santa Ana CA residents and oncology professionals. A new facility is coming to the southern CA region, bringing care options closer to home. Residents, healthcare leaders, and market stats all suggest that this is exactly what the area needs. For those living in the area, this means better options for care nearer to you, without having to drive over an hour for the type of doctor you need. Bringing top-notch care options closer to residents is critical to access and changes how many will experience treatment in the area. It means less cost to patients who travel out of town and pay for overnight stays. It means actually getting the care you deserve for those who are not able to overcome geographical and financial barriers to care in their region. For those working in rad-onc or planning to, and are from the area, you are getting a brand new facility as an option for your career. You can reconsider having to move away from your relatives to get the best job in your field. A trusted name and the best minds in the field are now in your backyard. This will drive oncology professionals to the region for better cost of living, housing, and research opportunities. Thank you to everyone involved in bringing care options closer to the southern CA region in Irvine. Let's celebrate better options for care and career opportunities for oncology workers. #Irvine #SantaAna #healthcare #oncology #careeropportunities #newfacility #healthcaretechnicalstaffing
Today, leaders from across the City of Hope system came together to launch the activation of our new and upcoming Irvine Hospital. It was a historic day as we plan for our second academic hospital in Southern California. Toward the end of the session leaders Annette Walker, Wendy Austin, Annette Morgan, M.B.A., Laura Grant, Dr. Ed Kim and I - took questions from the audience. At the start of the Q&A, there was silence for almost a minute as scores of leaders took their phones out and began taking pictures of the panel. Here is the moment Ed and I realized the audience was actually scanning the bar code above our heads in order to submit their questions - not taking a picture. Our influencer moment quickly evaporated! Thank you to all our leaders who participated. This will be an exceptional journey as we open a world class hospital in Irvine. Your talent, compassion and focus will lead to a place of healing like no other.
