Real wages of low-wage workers grew 12.1% between 2019 and 2023 and this growth was driven by policy decisions and a tight labor market. Why is this important? We need robust wage growth and worker power at the center of economic policymaking. To stem inequality and see healthy wage growth for the vast majority of workers, we need to use all the tools in our toolbox to reverse these policy trends—including prioritizing full employment, strengthening and enforcing labor standards, and removing obstacles to workers forming unions. This policy agenda would provide more broadly shared prosperity so that low- and middle-wage workers alike have opportunities to improve their standard of living. #A in a development  country like Singapore, a $2 surcharge is reasonable after midnight and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. This is because the workers etc have to be paid 50% or 100%(public holiday on weekend etc) more on these days. If you take a taxi after midnight , you have to pay 50% more (why), if you rent a holiday house from HDB or from NS Team, you have to pay 50% or more (why). Has anyone ever complained about these surcharges? You will feel better if you think that while you are enjoying on these days or sleeping soundly at home and these poor people have to work to meet your enjoyment. The big beat-up of the public sector continues, driven by the fallacy that everything is efficiency and light in the private sector. It's a bollocks binary. Excessive board room payouts often not related to performance. Profits made in Aotearoa New Zealand transferred overseas. Woefully poor workplace safety with over 400% more deaths at work than nearly all OECD countries, including Australia. Poverty wages that require the government to subsidise them through Working for Families and accommodation allowances. Companies (Fulton Hogan, Ryman Healthcare, Fletcher Building The Warehouse etc etc) claiming COVID wage subsidies while still making a decent profit and paying out dividends to shareholders and not workers. Corporate holidays to Fiji, Australia, Queenstown, Napier(??) (OK, maybe some hardship). Dodgy expense claims for entertainment, travel, car parking etc …. Large political donations for influence and self-interest. Discrimination and barriers to leadership and senior management positions while favouring older white guys – although it never worked for me! And so many of these companies will be providing services to the Government and taxpayer. Public sector bad – private sector good is ideological bullshit.

The impact of the increased National Minimum Wage (NMW) was debated in the house of Lord's last week. The question asked was "To ask His Majesty’s Government what steps they are taking to support charities which might struggle to pay salaries following the planned rise in the national minimum wage in April 2024, particularly those which provide support for adults with serious learning disabilities, and their families and carers." Ultimately, it was concluded with "The Government follow the recommendations of the independent Low Pay Commission. The evidence to date shows that the national living wage has given a pay rise to millions of people and reduced inequalities, without significantly harming employment prospects or having other adverse impacts. There are implications for businesses and charities—the Low Pay Commission’s impact assessments provide that evidence—but we are proud that, through the increase that comes in on 1 April, we will be giving a pay rise to around 3 million workers in this country." To me, the most startling statistic was "Since 2017 the national minimum wage has gone up by more than 50% but the funding rate from local authorities has gone up by 21%, undermining the viability of those organisations at the very time when entitlement to free childcare is going up."

📣 The Care Workers' Charity has issued a response to the recently unveiled Labour Party manifesto 📣 Karolina Gerlich, CEO of The Care Workers' Charity, says, "We welcome the fair pay agreement. Care workers, along with other low paid sectors, deserve employment security and real living wages. We would like clarification on how this will be achieved and funded and a timeline for when this will happen. Care work is continually listed as one of the lowest paying roles in the UK and we are pleased to see a discussion on changing the remit of the Low Pay Commission to account for the cost of living and ensure workers of all ages are paid enough to live on. The idea of a National Care Service is something we would be keen to hear more about regarding how this will be set up and run. We know that care workers have the skills to deliver these changes, but we would like to see plans which include how care workers' wages will rise in line with any additional responsibilities in health care and monitoring. Everyone in the care sector knows that there is no way to reform care without it being given priority and without full funding.
