Oh, Happy March to all of you! I personally look forward to March more than I do December for Christmas or even my birthday month of October. Because Christmas to me and what I would do for my birthday if I could is be engaged in March Madness and all the glory that it is. All due respect to the Super Bowl, the Master's, Wimbledon, and every other sporting event - but March Madness is simply the best. I'll die on that hill. And it reminds me why I got into this industry. I just love being a part of the unseen world of college athletics, at least the publicly unseen part. Maybe that sounds weird. But there's so much that goes into this stuff that never gets written about, isn't on TV, and yet matters a great deal. There's no press for writing an eligibility waiver that gets a kid back on the court/field, but it's a big development when it happens. There's no champagne popping for putting out day-of fires or methodically executing months-long preparations, but that's exactly what's needed for smoothly run championship events. And there's rarely flowers given for micro-aggressions being resolved between coaches, administrators, staff, student-athletes, donors, alumni and all the rest, but behind closed doors these issues are handled so the public perception and goodwill can keep on flowing. Point is, for me, the beauty of March is in it being THE grand microcosm of what gets me HYPE about my job and career - the unseen challenges and the seen euphoria - both of which I get to be a part of in a unique way. Anyone who's trying to break in or stay in this industry, please take time to remind yourself why. It doesn't matter when or how, but you'll need to remind yourself or else you'll get burned out. You'll lose heart. You'll let them get the best of you. So again, take the time to remind yourself why you do this. For me, that time is in March. #LinkedInSports #sportsbiz #sportsjobs

These people aren't qualified to make a suggestion, much less be responsible, and are a threat to the well-being & protections afforded to #Americans as Employees who play Sports. They lack credibility & authenticity & experience in #development, #oversight for 5 people. Using the media to be the advocate for over 500 thousand a year. Over the past week, my phone has been pinging, buzzing, and ringing with race team owners, drivers, and organization leaders looking for help with their race/ sports programs. While I have spent the past three decades committed to helping others build and fund their race programs, my attention has shifted to developing the RideSafe Foundation. When I became aware of the number of children being affected by these senseless, preventable tragedies, I set about to get educated on the details, share the info with others, and lock arms with others equipped to help. It is not about our organization—it is about the results—the impact on society as a whole, both now and in the future. That requires clarity, which in turn requires articulation, direction, and a disciplined work ethic—singularly applied to our future hope. The RideSafe Foundation has achieved so much in the past year solely through the combined efforts of our allies, who are united with us and moving in the same direction. This model produces results- as we are all in mutual agreement, working toward the same solution, simply applying our unique resources and personalities to the cause. Because of my commitment to RideSafe, I am unable to spend time guiding others through the funding process. Yet, I know how desperate others are to build their own programs, and sound advice is hard to come by these days. I approach program development differently because I recognize that building your dream — actually means building a team. It is not about the laser focus of winning a championship or achieving your set goals. Instead, it is something of the opposite of that. You must look to the broader communal benefit of what you are doing. I know that sounds like hippie logic, but in fact, it is not. It is actually the driver for success, and it is not as difficult as you imagine. It's like rungs on a ladder—you must know where to place your foot next. If you miss that step, you will bleed a bit and have to try again. While I cannot take on new projects, I can share what I know. With that, I am inviting all of you to join me on a virtual call to get you moving in the right direction. It's free. No downloads, no email required—none of that. I am just going to talk—with the sole aim of helping those weary of trying to figure this all out on their own. I have been immersed in the thick of it, from amateur grassroots to world-class championship programs. I will share the basics, the logic, and the strategy, hoping to inspire some big "a-ha" moments that will give you clarity and set your feet confidently in the right direction. When she wants to drop out: find a way, value her, understand the societal pressures, show her the positives, take away the pressure and make it fun. We all thrive at different times but if we are not in we cannot win. At a minimum that 14 year old girl must see herself as success and success is for her not just for the movies ♥️ It’s been a while since I started my role Lidl Ireland as an Athlete Mentor and it is probably about time to add some of my more recent positions and projects here from Youth Related Services @ Amella Coaching Why this project for me? Sport has been one of the main pillars in my life that has contributed to much more than what I share on social media. Apart from how to win and what it takes; ive learned invaluable lessons and skills that I’ve relied on to navigate through life! It wasn’t all medals and claps on the back to say the least!!! Its taught me how to loose but never give up, how to be fair, how to collaborate, when to walk away, to be relentless, that not everyone will believe in me, that they don’t have to but I absolutely must, there will be good and bad days, to try again tomorrow, your never too late and never too old! I’ve needed these skills, experiences & familiarities banked over the years to push through some of the most challenging and equally successful times personally, professionally and of course in sport. Most of all sport has allowed me to spend a lot of time with strong, talented, supportive, successful & really good fun people. Someone once told me your network will be your greatest asset. I believe this to be very very true. Lets give our girls a chance to be as great as they can be and keep them involved somehow especially through their teenage years where drop out in sport is 1 in 5 girls. Research also shows that 94% of women executives participate in sports. The research is startling. We must do better to set our girls up for success. There that’s why it fits!!!! I was that 14 year old girl too. Yesterday I was privileged to spend a day in Middlesbrough and South Tees with Isac Mitchell and colleagues from You've Got This, one of Sport England's deepening places. Being relatively new to Sport England's work in Place, it was great to actually chat to partners and organisations working in the communities we invest in and understand what place based systemic work looks like in practice within South Tees. As I drove home, my head was spinning. Reflecting on the day and the conversations I'd heard, two things really stood out to me: 1. If we want to tackle inequalities at their root, the work which we do in communities and our local and national policy must account for the multiple ways inequalities manifest in people’s everyday lives - recognising the role which intersectionality plays, is key, in not only understanding inequalities in physical activity, but also wider inequalities, and creating solutions to overcome them. 2. There are passionate people right across our communities who are desperate for change and we need to ensure that 'we' build the capability and capacity, and the means by which communities, and those with lived experience can advocate for, influence and be involved in policy and decision making relating to their own spaces, places and communities. Despite my head spinning from the sheer complexity of working with complex challenges associated not only with physical activity, but also poverty, ill-health, education etc. which are manifesting in a Place, I'm really excited to continue to be involved in the wider Place work moving forwards. 🏅 How being an athlete may help you at work 🏅 Like most folks, I'm obsessed with watching the Olympics this summer. It's so satisfying seeing people who are best at their craft experiencing what might be the highlight of their careers. I was a competitive fencer in high school. I was nowhere near as good as the folks competing in Paris but I was the captain of my high school team and traveled for lots of national competitions. When talking to college hires and early in career folks who don't have a lot of work experience, I like to compare some of the learnings I got from being an athlete on a team to what I've learned at work. ⏱ Putting in the time & work - When you first start training or when you first start in your career, there's nothing more important than just putting in the time and getting experience under your belt. Sometimes that means doing the same thing over and over until it's muscle memory. Sometimes that means competing against a lot of different people to get experience with lots of different situations. Same goes for career - nothing can take the place of time, practice, and experiences. 👯♀️ It's all about the team - Fencing is a funny sport because you compete as an individual but there are team competitions where the total score of the team matters. You have to carry your weight as an individual, but you need to rely on the other folks on your team to win. You learn from, practice with, and compete against your teammates. Same goes at work - you get better because of the folks on your team, you learn from them, rely on them, and yes, there's still that aspect of competition when it comes to promotions, rewards, etc. 🌍 Communities are small - The fencing community in New York City was small. Every competition had the same folks, every training camp I went to had the same group of coaches, and even in national competitions, I'd compete with the same people often. This community ended up helping me get better through competition, practice, and in many cases, became my good friends. Same goes for work - the community I've built has been an awesome resource for mentors, friends, new jobs, advice, learning, etc.

Roundtable - Raising resilience: Giving the younger generation a sporting chance of success “If we give youngsters the aspiration to believe, to have confidence and to understand what relationship building can do, we will supercharge them to do some incredible things.” In a recent roundtable discussion, hosted by NET alongside Newcastle Rugby Foundation and Barnard Castle School at Jesmond Dene Real Tennis Club, education leaders and senior industry figures shared their thoughts and insight on the current landscape in schools and what can be done to better assess, prepare and develop young people for a rapidly changing world. In a wide-ranging discussion, which focused on building resilience and confidence in young people, there was consensus amongst the panel that the current education system, which places such importance on exam results, does little to build the character, communication, teamwork or problem-solving skills that are so highly prized by employers, nor does it provide an obvious career path for many, leaving them without the tools or the self-belief to enter the workplace.
