🌟 Today, on Women’s Equality Day, we reflect on the progress made since the passing of the 19th Amendment in 1919, granting (some) women the right to vote. 🗳️
👩⚖️ When the 19th Amendment became law on August 26, 1920, approximately 26 million adult female Americans were eligible to vote. However, it took decades for full electoral equality to be realized, especially for women of color who faced additional barriers.
🌍 The federal suffrage amendment marked a milestone in prohibiting discrimination based on sex, yet it did not address the other forms of discrimination that many women from marginalized communities endured. Women from Native American, Asian American, Latinx, and African American backgrounds continued their fight for enfranchisement long after the 19th Amendment's ratification, gradually gaining access to the ballot over the following years.
