The last few weeks have been riddled with reminders of the way people view me: kind. While reconnecting with an old friend from two decades ago on a video call, her daughter interrupted us, and I was flabbergasted to hear her tell her daughter, "This is Hannah. Remember how I always tell you to be kind? Hannah is the kindest person I've ever met, and I will always remember that about her." When dealing with an ethical dilemma and discussing with my advisory circle about feeling torn between want and the potential moral implications, their advice was to do what I felt was truly right, because I am one of the kindest people they know and kindness is rarely wrong. Over the past few years, I've been on a journey of self-discovery that has been primarily rooted in deconstructing old traumas and building better boundaries and self-respect. At first, this was seen by many in my life as a loss of kindness within me. It was seen as combativeness by family, as a lack of empathy in peers. Eventually, and with the support of friends, I came to realize that it was simply that I was no longer extending kindness only outwards. I had started to extend kindness to myself. The people I was losing were going away because I built kinder boundaries for myself. The people who saw me as combative were merely losing the thread of kindness that had run loose and was turning into a liability to my wholeness. The kind that lacks boundaries and invites abuse, because it forgets that kindness to others does not mean sacrificing kindness to yourself. When you are a good person, creating boundaries and having self-respect begins to chip away at the people in your life who are not good. It begins to draw ire and insecurity from others who have not yet reached the markers you have managed to find. Let them go. It's not a matter of being better or worse than other people; it's a matter of realizing that when your shoes don't fit, you need to focus on the ones that do and pass the others on to find their own right fit. Kindness should extend to others, but also to yourself. When it no longer extends both ways because you allow others to be unkind to you extensively and without accountability, you're doing everyone a disservice. Let them lose you. The kind part is allowing them to come back when they can respect the kindness you show yourself instead of expecting you to tolerate their bad behavior.

Truth bomb time, leaders: When you're a good leader, you don't lose people... they lose YOU. I've learned this the hard way in my career. I used to bend over backwards for my team, taking on extra work, staying late, and always putting their needs before my own. I thought this was the way to be a good leader – to be selfless and always available. But what happened? I burned out. I became resentful. And worst of all, my team didn't respect me more for it. In fact, some of them started to take advantage of my good nature. They expected my constant availability and sacrifice, mistaking kindness for weakness. It took me a while to realize, but I was the one losing out. I was losing my time, my energy, and my sanity. I was sacrificing my own well-being for the sake of a team that didn't fully appreciate it. So I made a change. I started setting boundaries. I learned to delegate. And I started prioritizing my own well-being. I realized that taking care of myself was not selfish; it was essential for me to be an effective leader in the long run. Guess what? The world didn't end. My team didn't fall apart. In fact, things got better. I became a more effective leader, my team became more self-sufficient, and we all started to thrive. By setting boundaries and empowering my team, I created a more sustainable and productive work environment. The moral of the story? Being a good leader doesn't mean being a doormat. It means setting clear expectations, holding people accountable, and taking care of yourself. If you're always the one giving and never receiving, it's time to reassess your leadership style.
