Thank you, Transport for NSW, for the invitation to talk about data, analytics, and machine learning in a transport context with your team of experts. As you can see, it is a topic I love to talk about. In this screenshot, I am walking attendees through a demo of our Digital Twin tool for transport. Not surprisingly, it got a lot of attention. It's the kind of topic that inspires blue-sky thinking due to its many use cases, such as the ability to simulate access to restricted areas in a safe manner. We also talked about #dataanalytics challenges and use cases, user analytics systems, and the role of #machinelearning and AI in helping predict transport energy usage and manage real-time service disruptions. We delved a little bit into the weeds of data, explaining how it works within an organisation and discussing things such as the types of data we analyse (whether that be real-time or batch data) and then how it is typically delivered to a client. It was fun. Data is fun. Anyhow, I want to specifically call out Martha Gordillo for organising these sessions that encourage information sharing and innovation among your Transport colleagues. ICYMI! HASS COE Senior Strategist Eric Raamot spoke last week at #ITSA2024 on the potential of digital intersections to transform the future of urban mobility. The panel also included Chicago Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner for Traffic Safety and Technology Abraham Emmanuel, Miovision CEO Kurtis McBride and Senior Product Manager Kashif Umer, and GEOTAB Senior Business Development Manager Nate Veeh. Our key takeaways from the session: 🗝 Unleashing the potential of digital intersections requires a cultural shift as we reimagine infrastructure as a living digital system within a services-oriented architecture. 🗝 Digitization of infrastructure transcends our deep industry and political reliance upon the systems engineering process enacted through capital improvement programs. This will require deployment of data producing systems that operate within validated service level agreements (SLAs) at all times. 🗝 Current standards can be redesigned to support a service-oriented architecture that serves the needs of the data interfacing subsystems and applications. This requires designing trustable, extensible, and commercially fair data interfaces as SLAs that encourage innovators and inhibit proprietary vendor/spec locks. 🗝 We can begin by together developing system metrics to steer our collaborative design. These metrics will help define appropriate data interfaces, enable framework for SLA validation, and establish consistent means to measure program outcomes and transportation system impacts. 🗝 Support for road user and private sector needs requires inclusiveness of additional stakeholders that together will establish requirements for standards and specifications beyond the traditional requirements established by human-in-the-loop system operators. 🗝 Public-private partnerships and collaboration, including democratization of knowledge and data, can form an ecosystem that allows companies to publish information and capabilities for others to use, share, and extend. Under a collective design, it will reduce the disparity of localized deployments and promote national level scalability of emergent applications. Let’s break them down with simple explanations and real-life examples: 1. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐤𝐞 A Data Lake is a large storage space where we keep all kinds of raw data until we need it. For instance, a social media company stores unprocessed user activity logs and photos here to analyze trends later. 2. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭 A Data Mart is a smaller, more focused set of data designed for specific business needs. Imagine a sales team using a Data Mart to quickly access customer purchase histories and sales figures for their reports. 3. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 A Data Pipeline moves data from its source to where it’s needed, making sure it’s clean and ready to use. Think of a healthcare system keeping patient records here to track and analyze treatment outcomes over time. 5. 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Data Quality means ensuring our data is accurate, complete, and reliable.
