World Ocean Day is around the corner, and although London is not by the coast, our oceans, marine life, and coastal communities across the world are suffering, partly because of the way we eat and consume right here in our city. A topic that has been quite overlooked but deserves more attention and action is fish farming, particularly of carnivorous fish like salmon, sea bream, and sea bass. So, what's the problem? Well, there is now growing evidence of widespread damage caused by fish farming. As stated by Eva Douzinas, President of the US Rauch Foundation and leader of the Seas of Change campaign, who spoke on BBC World News this morning (link below), we are witnessing the destruction of sea meadows, ecosystems, local fisheries, and livelihoods from the world’s fastest-growing food industry. Over 160 NGOs, think tanks, and scientists from six continents have called in an open letter for the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to remove carnivorous fish farms from their definition of 'sustainable aquaculture', citing overwhelming evidence of harm to the environment, society, and economy. Two striking figures: • According to the industry, it takes 1.2 kg of wild fish to produce 1 kg of farmed fish (insane, right?) with terrible associated impacts on communities that rely on these resources. • 75% of salmon consumed internationally (according to the FAO) are farmed (remember that salmon in your California maki last weekend? It was very likely farmed). What can we do about it? There are solutions to limit the expansion of this industry by first reducing demand, calling for clearer and more stringent regulations regarding 'sustainable fish farming', and adopting more sustainable choices like looking for labels or visiting restaurants partnered with the Off the Table campaign, which do not serve farmed fish on their menus. You can also explore alternatives like wild fish (yes, it is more expensive and can contribute to over-fishing), lower environmental impact seafood like oysters, mussels, or algae, and why not try plant-based seafood (I haven’t tried it myself). Also, I recommend watching the documentary 'Until the End of the World' by filmmaker Francesco De Augustinis, who methodically exposes the negative impacts of this industry across the world in a clear, rigorous, and informative way. ✋🏽🌊🐟🛑 World Ocean Day (today) marks the start of the #FishFarmsOut campaign! Last year, we launched #SavePoros to try combat the extreme, illogical plan to take over 25% of this beautiful Greek island's coastline AND mainland into fish farms. Just a year later, this effort has grown into a global campaign involving communities from Tasmania and Chile, to Scotland, Spain, and Greece. Today, we urge world leaders to protect our wild fish, waters and communities from the unsustainable method of food production that is industrial fish farming (of carnivorous species). More than 160 coastal communities, NGOs, and scientists from 6 continents have signed and sent an open letter to the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) demanding the removal of fish farming from its list of “sustainable” aquaculture activities. June 7 is World Oceans Day and we are grateful to be part of a worldwide effort to inform the public of the devastating effect of farming salmon, sea bream, sea bass, and other carnivorous fish. It is an unsustainable business model that consumes more wild fish than is produced, yet the industry continues to promote the myth that the so-called blue revolution is "feeding the world." Polluting our waters and coastlines, fish farms decimate communities both where the fish are farmed and where the wild fish are taken for fish meal. As we have learned more and more about the effects of fish farming on coastal communities and marine ecosystems, we have met extraordinary people and groups from around the world that are leading the opposition to this destructive industry, many of whom are listed below. World Fisheries Day is celebrated on November 21 to highlight the critical importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world. This Day celebrates the efforts of small-scale fisheries and strengthens their human rights to make a true difference in the working conditions of fishing communities and to eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing. Globally, the sector employs 120 million people, and 97% of developing countries. The industry has crucial importance in the food system for a healthy and diverse diet. However, it is also essential to expose the industry's unsustainable practices on human health and the environment. FAO is organising a hybrid high-level event in partnership with the Holy See and Stella Maris at FAO’s headquarters this World fisheries day 2023.
