Mid-Internship Reflections at Splunk 🌟 I've already crossed the halfway mark of my internship at Splunk! Over the past month, I've sharpened skills that I didn't anticipate. 1. Multitasking and Collaboration: I've learned to switch between teams and project tasks, ensuring smooth coordination. 2. Time Management and Prioritization: Daily standups, calendar management, and prioritizing tasks have become second nature. These practices have helped me stay disciplined and manage anxiety effectively. 3. Embracing culture: At Splunk, The decentralized structure allows teams to work independently, and team members care about the intern's progress. 4. Patience and Perseverance: Navigating multiple rounds of approvals and staying calm before gaining internal software access has taught me the value of patience. 5. Overcoming Imposter Syndrome: Although I sometimes feel self-doubt, diving into work reminds me why Splunk is the perfect place to grow and prepare for my future career. A special shoutout to Chau Tang and Evelyn Sun whom I bug daily with my doubts. Each day, I strive to become the best version of myself, embracing and learning from my mistakes. I'm also honing my core skills in SQL and Tableau, aiming to become a stronger candidate by the time I graduate next May. LoOoOve my current experience at Splunk 🙌 🎉 ✨ I’ve received several DMs asking about my career journey. Here are my 2 cents to share to my fellow design students/peers: What we learned in school — the academic design frameworks — are more tools and skills to help us understand different aspect of approaches. In real-life challenges, we don’t apply every one of these to the projects, and we’ll probably even come up with our own methods to gather the insights we need. I’ve noticed many students put competitive analysis, surveys, user flows, etc, in their portfolio and writing about what they did for each process. They rarely explain *why* they did what they did and *why* this information helps to understand their design decisions. You don't need to put allllllllllllllllllllllllll the process and details in your portfolio 😵 What I have learned is that it's more efficient to help people understand your design decision by focusing on the ***why*** and how you come up with your approaches, rather than just telling or showing everything you did. At Splunk, I learned rather than calling it "solution", "approach" is a better word. As student, we often rush into designing and user-testing the design but not user test your approaches or user flows. This can lead to user feedback that focuses only on the already developed design, not on whether the solution actually addresses the problem. In real life as a designer, we often explore every aspect of our approaches and discuss them with the design team, experts, or professionals to demonstrate the value, iterate on the designs based on feedback, and establish a shared understanding. Reflecting these days about my career, I stumbled upon this memory: this December marks my 11 year career anniversary. It's a bit scary thinking about it, but also good to celebrate self accomplishments. It's been a great ride with ups and downs, full of amazing people around me (starting with my family), pleasant camaraderie and unpredictable challenges. This is not a list of direct shareable knowledge as I'll always be a listener and a learner, but hopefully these words can shed some light on someone's dark roads. I started late in my tech career. Due to a variety of reasons, I had to see myself 4 or 5 years older than the majority of students beginning their Computer Science under graduation. But that was my dream, so I've never given up. In 2012 off I was into the wild industry, and it was the same story, I was 5 years older than everyone starting to work at the same company, same role, level and salary. Again, I was having fun living and loving my dream, so what's the matter?! It was a true joy to work with everything at the same time, getting exposed to lots of new stuff. And I had good mentors to whom I owe some pints till this day! Life (and love) came in the way, luckily, and I got married. And suddenly we were 3, this was one of my dreams while in teenage phase; to have a family. I was fulfilled for quite some time, thought that life couldn't be better. 2018 showed that we could have more, we could change and feel new experiences. I got this AWSome offer to move abroad. I had never even lived in a different state in my home country, I was a real countryside person. But that was about to face a new reality. My family and I decided to accept this offer and get to know a new life. We spent a couple of months reborning; new docs, new food, even a different way to do the dishes. We loved to change. Since then I have been extremely happy with those decisions. Got to know so many different people from everywhere in the world. Helped to improve both network automation and infrastructure. Automated the automation. Expanded my soft skillset thanks to my manager. I'm so grateful for everything and everyone so far. I've been working for 10 years for only 2 companies because I enjoy doing like this. That's not a rule for everyone to follow. The happier you are, the better your career is. I'd like to thank my family first, they've been with me through all those ups and downs. Thanks to all my mentors for teaching me how to properly deal with pressure and also making me a more-curious person. Thanks to all my colleagues who have shared the pain along the way and helped so much. I'm privileged to have been surrounded by such brilliant minds. Thank you all! Can't wait for what's there in the next 11 years!

Today marks my 2 year work anniversary at Technology Networks! ✨ I feel very fortunate to be able to say that I absolutely love my job. It has been such a rewarding (and fun) experience, no two days are the same! Social media is a dynamic and exciting environment, and I get to explore so many creative avenues. I've worked with some incredible colleagues and have made some fantastic friendships 😊 Plus, the scientific industry has allowed me to feel like I'm constantly learning, (which I also love to do!) I can't wait to see what 2024 has in store! I also wanted to share something I learned in the hopes that it might inspire someone to take a chance. I *ALMOST* never even applied for the job! 😱 The job description ticked every box for me, but self-doubt took over. I thought "Surely I am not a good fit, I don't have a scientific background", so I was on the fence about applying. Low and behold, my mum had also seen the job role, and was the final push of encouragement for me to apply, citing something along the lines of "What is the worst that could happen?" And it's true, there is nothing to lose. So I went ahead and applied and here we are 2 years later! 🎉 So the advice I wanted to share from this experience is to take a chance - even though it sounds cliché! If you don't try, you'll never know. Like the sound of that dream job? Go for it, the worst you can get is a "no". #WorkAnniversary #Career #Advice
