Some truly scary headlines coming out recently about microplastics and human health, with a recent study finding that "More than half of people undergoing surgery for clogged arteries had blood vessels riddled with microplastics, the study found, and those patients had a far greater chance of heart attack, stroke and death compared to people whose arteries were free from plastic.” https://lnkd.in/eH-Ess_Q ♒ Microplastics come from many sources, but a major one is during domestic and commercial laundry, with UK laundry alone generating an average of 17,234 tonnes of microfibres each year, the equivalent weight of 1,500 double-decker buses 🏛 It’s rare to see anything solution oriented for such a tiny but enormous problem, but a glimmer of hope is offered by the XEROS and Matter. teams who published their whitepaper last week in partnership with A Plastic Planet PlanetCare and The 5 Gyres Institute calling for UK legislation for mandatory microfibre filters on washing machines. 🚱 We absolutely need upstream solutions – such as redesign and less harmful materials, to tackle this issue systemically. But downstream solutions, like filtration and wastewater treatment, must also be part of the answer to effectively tackle this extensive pollution. A market solution is ready and available here, we must take the low-hanging fruit. 🌊 Microfibre filters can stop up to 99% of microplastics from washing out directly into nature. Implemented at scale, filtration has the ability to save billions of microplastics from entering our waterways. Research (secondary literature review) revealed that the industries that do not have effluent treatment plants are discharging microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) into both air and water. Marine and freshwater organisms are consuming these MPs and NPs. These plastic particles then enter the human body through inhalation and skin contact. Once inside, MPs and NPs can be transported throughout the body via the circulatory system and accumulate in our body parts. Ultimately, these particles return to the environment through human waste. This is high time to prevent plastic pollution from our mother Earth.

If we want to address microplastics, we need to understand them and measure them properly.     NIST researcher and University of Maryland student George Caceres is working to develop instruments that can help measure the tiniest of microplastics. How small? How about a fraction of the width of a single human hair?    His research is in the early stages, but understanding plastic pollution is critical to protecting the planet and human health.
