On International Transgender Day of Visibility, we stand united in acknowledgment of the discrimination and challenges that persist. 🏳️⚧️ This day is a call to action. As we honour the resilience of the transgender community, we also recognize our collective responsibility to stand up against discrimination, be vocal advocates and allies, and actively champion equality. Being an ally involves understanding, empathy, and support. Happy International Transgender Day of Visibility or TDOV! Evident in 2024 is intensifying backlash toward trans people, be it through legislative measures which, according to the American Civil Liberties Union, includes 479 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across state legislatures this year alone, to direct physical violence, declared an epidemic by the American Medical Association since 2019, which disproportionately affects Black trans women with a majority being young people of color. That’s why it’s necessary for trans people to be seen through authentic, diverse, and accurate stories which reflect the actual lived experiences of trans people; both for themselves and for the people who believe they’ve never met a trans person.(Source: glaad). As business leaders, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion conversations often hold limited purpose thoughts: race and sex. I’m thankful that Advanced Group recognizes diversity conversations must be broader. Visibility matters. We should take this day to ask ourselves: “Are our actions helping transgender and non-binary workers feel seen, supported and safe.” Asking the question impacts so many lives, including your own. Your business will be positively impacted as well. It is impossible to garner the rich benefit diversity provides if we refuse to see. #dei #diversity

Ever wondered about the significance of the colors on the Transgender Pride flag? Let's dive into it's history and symbolism.  In 1999, Monica Helms, a Navy veteran and transgender woman, woke up one morning with an incredible idea. She created the Transgender Pride Flag, and as she described it, it was more of a "divine intervention" than a dream. She first flew the flag at the 2000 Phoenix Pride parade, and from there, its popularity soared. The original flag now resides in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. But what do the colors signify? The pink represents all femme-identified folks of multiple genders. The blue represents all masculine-identified folks of multiple genders, and the white in the middle represents those who are transitioning, have a neutral or no gender identity, and those who are intersex.  Monica Helms ingeniously designed the flag so that no matter how you display it, it always looks the same. This symbolizes the journey to find correctness in our lives. So, the next time you see the Transgender Pride Flag, you'll know the beautiful story behind it. Remembering, Honoring, and Standing Together Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we unite to pay our respects and raise awareness for the transgender lives lost to violence and discrimination. It's a day to remember, honor, and stand up for a more inclusive and accepting world for all. The statistics are sobering, and the stories are heartbreaking, but we must remember that every name represents a person with dreams, hopes, and the right to live authentically. Transgender individuals face unique challenges and injustices, often stemming from prejudice and ignorance. Let us pledge to do better: 1. Educate Ourselves: Take the time to learn about the experiences and challenges of transgender individuals. 2. Raise Our Voices: Speak out against discrimination, violence, and hatred. Be an ally for the transgender community. 3. Support Transgender Rights: Advocate for equal rights and protections for transgender individuals. 4. Promote Inclusivity: Create spaces and communities where transgender people feel safe, valued, and respected. 5. Remember Always: Today, we remember those we've lost, but let's remember them every day by working towards a more just and accepting world. Trans kids deserve protection, support, and the opportunity to explore their identities on their own terms and with the guarantee of safety and privacy. The multiple communities I come from, including my South Sudanese community, my childhood religious community (LDS), my local community, and my cis-het community have a lot of work to do to interrogate and correct the discriminatory, dangerous, and harmful views we hold on LGBTQ+ identities and experiences. I know very well that these communities each struggle with a wide range of challenges, but I also know that we possess powerful and limitless scores of love and kindness. It is incumbent on all of us to expand the reach of this love and take a strong stance against hate and discrimination for all. Beyond this, it is our responsibility - and profound privilege - to show LGBTQ+ members of each of our communities that they carry immeasurable value and worth; that they have a safe place to be themselves in our presence. Trans rights are the civil rights issue of our time and you, me - all of us - play a critical role in keeping the LGBTQ+ community safe from violence within our unique communities. This includes within our schools, churches, workplaces, bathrooms, and everywhere else. For anyone reading this, I invite you to take time to explore this serious issue in the spirit of self-examination and openness. I also invite you to sit with me in conversation should you feel the need to talk through your thoughts and perspectives on this issue.
